Internship

OVERVIEW: 

US Squash is a vibrant, collaborative National Governing Body (NGB) based in Philadelphia, PA and is looking for summer interns who are passionate about squash and interested in developing the skills to be a professional squash coach. Interns in this position will report to the Senior Director of Professional Development and will work closely with the Specter Center Squash Director and other US Squash programs and event staff who will certify and teach them the necessary skills to be a successful squash coach in the US. 

KEY PROGRAM ELEMENTS:  

  1. Coaching: Learn important coaching values, ensuring a strong, enthusiastic delivery. Extra homework assessments will be given for the squash planning, content and structure.  Interns will achieve ‘Start Squash’ and/or ‘Level 1’ certification depending on their ability by the end of the internship. 
  1. Lessons/Clinics: Organize/plan for daily, weekly, and ad-hoc private lessons or group clinics. Learn and apply a structured, educational, and fun plan to lessons and clinics.   
  1. Camps: Learn how to plan and run summer camps, ensuring correct coaching coverage, management of payment from participants, squash themes, daily plans, equipment, funds, marketing for successful delivery and attendance etc. 
  1. Event management: Learn how to run a tournament (bronze level) from the scheduling, communication, and planning from behind the scenes to the actual in person event. Help with general event set up and break down. 
  1. Budget: Learn how to follow/set up a budget. Listing expenses and income for events, camp, lessons etc.  
  1. Outreach: Learn the process of outreach to local schools and centers to offer camp/programs if appropriate.  
  1. High Performance: Observe and assist in the delivery of all aspects the junior high performance program sessions throughout the summer supporting the junior national coaches as required. 
  1. Programs: Set up and implement important program extras such as a mentoring program, sticker board program or fitness board.  
  1. Social media: Help with squash exposure and get all summer squash activity onto social media in a fun and exciting way. Bring ideas to the table for marketing squash.  
  1. Private Club setting: Spend a week at a local private club and learn the differences between managing programs with different financial models.  

QUALIFICATION:  

  • Possess a passion for squash and growing the sport. 
  • Pass all the requirements for a valid coaching certification (SafeSport training, CPR/first Aid training and level 4 referee exam). 
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.  
  • Current member of a college/university club or varsity squash team.  
  • Ability to meet deadlines, handle tasks responsibly and work independently. 

 

OTHER DETAILS:  

  • Candidates must be available for approx. 40 hours per week for a 10-week period * 
  • Candidates must be available to work weekends and evenings if necessary.  
  • Candidates will be paid $20 per hour for all work (coaching and admin) 

*Hours per week and duration of internship are negotiable, for the right candidate, based on the student’s needs.
