The Connecticut Junior Championships, the first Junior Championship Tour of the season, concluded Monday at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. JCTs feature the highest level of junior competition and play a key role in selecting players for the US national teams. The Connecticut Junior Championships set the stage for an exciting JCT season, featuring great competition and tough matchups.
Top seed and last year’s GU19 winner, Reeham Sedky, defended her title beating fellow 2013 Girls’ World Junior Championships National Team member, two seed, and last year’s GU17 winner, Kayley Leonard, in a close three game final, 11-7, 12-10, 11-8. The victory topped off a perfect weekend for Sedky who did not drop a game.
Two seed Atticus Kelly won the BU19 division after his opponent, one seed Arhum Saleem, was forced to withdraw due to injury after dropping the first game. Saleem was hurt during his five-game semifinal match against Derek Hsue, 10-12, 11-9, 10-12, 11-9, 11-7.
Last year’s GU17 winner, Eleonore Evans faced Isabelle Ezratty in the GU17 final, winning in three games, 11-9, 11-1, 11-7. Evans came back from a two game deficit to upset two seed Kate Feeley in the semis, 7-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-8, 11-3. Ezratty knocked out the one seed Meta Melby in a five-game semifinal, 7-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4.
Top seed Sean Hughes beat unseeded Timmy Brownell in a four-game final to win the BU17 division, 7-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-5. Brownell had upset two seed Carson Spahr in the semifinal in five games, 10-11, 7-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-3.
The GU15 final saw two unseeded players faceoff. Elle Ruggiero beat Jane Pincus in three games, 11-8, 13-11, 11-1. Pincus knocked off two seed Cameron Munn in the semifinal, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9, 11-4. Ruggiero upset the top seed Emme Leonard in a long five game quarterfinal, 11-9, 1-11, 11-8, 9-11, 12-10.
One seed Samuel Sherl fought back to win the BU15 final after dropping the first game to unseeded Joe O’Connor, 12-14, 11-8, 13-11, 11-4.
Unseeded Elisabeth Ross won the GU13 division after knocking out top seed Haley Aube in a four-game semifinal, 8-11, 11-7, 12-10, 14-12, and defeating two seed Caroline Spahr in a hard-fought five-game final, 10-11, 11-5, 11-8, 5-11, 11-5.
Mateo Giraldo beat top seed Tyler Mackesy in four games to win the BU13 final, 5-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-4. On his way to the final, Giraldo also upset last year’s BU11 winner and two seed Nicholas Spizzirri in a five game quarterfinal, 11-7, 6-11, 7-11, 11-4, 11-4.
Two seed Devon Shatzman upset top seed Molly Stoltz in a tight four-game final to win the GU11 division, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 12-10.
Unseeded Alec Spiro beat two seed Charles Braff in five games to win the BU11 finals, 7-11, 11-8, 10-12, 13-11, 14-12. Spiro took out top seed Rohan Iyer in the semis, 11-8, 11-8, 3-11, 11-5.
