Six U.S. Players Highlight Open Squash Draws

Draws have been announced for the 2010 U.S. Open Squash Championships, being held September 25th-October 3rd, in Chicago, Il. Six U.S. players, including wildcard selection Chris Gordon (pictured on left) highlight the main draws, three on the men's side along with three on the women's. Defending champion Amr Shabana of Egypt is the # 1 seed. 

 

Alex Gough to Give Keynote Address at U.S. SQUASH Annual Assembly

U.S. SQUASH has announced that Alex Gough (pictured on left), the CEO of the Professional Squash Association (PSA), will be the keynote speaker at the 2010 Annual Assembly being held October 1st-2nd, in Chicago, IL. Gough, a native of Wales, was appointed the CEO of the PSA in February of 2009 after a stellar 15 year playing career during which he won 10 tour titles and was ranked as high as #5 in the World. 

 

U.S. Rolls to Win in Squash Border Battle

The United States ended a two year drought in resounding fashion as they rolled to a 19-5 victory over Ontario in the 2010 Ontario-American Challenge at the White Oak Resort and Spa in Ontario, Canada. After losing in excruciatingly tight matches the past two years, the U.S. juniors overpowered their neighbors to the North to take home the "Battle of the Border" trophy.

Team USA Secures 12th Place Finish at 2010 World Squash Championships

The United States Junior Men’s team finished in 12th place at the 2010 World Junior Men’s Squash Championships in Quito, Ecuador. The tournament, which attracted players from twenty-five countries, consisted of two events, starting with the individual competition followed by the team championship.

France Tops U.S. at Junior Squash Championships

The United States was defeated by France, 3-0, in the round of sixteen at the 2010 World Junior Men's Squash Championships in Quito, Ecuador. With the loss, the U.S. now faces Columbia in the 9/16 bracket. 

U.S. and France Meet in Round of Sixteen at Junior Squash Championships

The United States split two pool play matches, sweeping the Cayman Islands, 3-0, before dropping a tight battle with Germany, 2-1, and now advance to face France in the round of sixteen at the 2010 World Junior Men's Squash Championships in Quito, Ecuador.

 

Eighth Seeded U.S. Begins Team Competition at World Squash Championships

The United States will meet the Cayman Island's and Germany today as pool play in the team competition gets underway at the 2010 World Junior Men's Squash Championships in Quito, Ecuador. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the round of 16 knockout stage of the tournament.

 

U.S. SQUASH Team Trials Rescheduled

The U.S. Men's and Women's Team Trials, originally slated for September 24th-26th, have been rescheduled and will now take place September 11th-13th, 2010, in New York City. The trials are being held in order to select the final team members who will represent the United States at the 2010 Pan American Squash Federation Championships, November 5th-14th in Guatemala, and at the 2010 World Women's Team Championships, November 29th-December 4th, in New Zealand.

World Junior Squash Championships Get Underway in Ecuador

The U.S. team is represented by six players as competition begins today at the 2010 World Junior Men's Squash Championships in Quito, Ecuador. The tournament, which attracts juniors from twenty-five countries, consists of two events, with the singles competition starting today, followed by the team championship, which will begin on August 2nd.

Fry Replaces Fast on U.S. SQUASH Board of Directors

On July 1, 2010, John A. Fry (pictured on left) officially joined the U.S. SQUASH Board of Directors as a Class 3 Director. Fry takes the place of outgoing Board member Eric C. Fast, whose term expired in June. Fry, who recently left Franklin and Marshall College after eight years as president will assume the role of president at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA on August 1st.

U.S. Tops Canada to Win Bronze Medal at World University Squash Championships

U.S. SQUASH Annual Assembly Set for Chicago

The U.S. SQUASH Board of Directors recently resolved to host an Annual Assembly, the first of which will be held October 1st-2nd, 2010, in conjunction with the U.S. Open Squash Championships in Chicago, Illinois. The Assembly will be an opportunity for all squash constituencies to provide input to the Board of Directors and management on important issues involving the organization. 

Harrity Wins Bronze in Australia

Todd Harrity (PA) (pictured on left) defeated Leo Au of Hong Kong to win the bronze medal at the 2010 World University Squash Championships in Melbourne, Australia. Harrity, who will be entering his sophomore year at Princeton University this fall, bounced back from a loss to second seeded Jen Schoor of Germany in the semi-finals to defeat Au, 11-7, 11-5, 11-3, in the 3/4 playoff. With the individual competition now complete, the United States squad turns their focus to the team competition, which begins tomorrow. 

U.S. Juniors Compete in German and Dutch Tourneys

The United States was well represented as over 200 juniors populated draws at the the 2010 Pioneer Junior Squash Cup in Cologne, Germany, and the 2010 Dutch Junior Open in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The Pioneer and the Dutch, which are both part of the European Junior Super Series, drew nearly 900 players overall, with U.S. players competing in every draw. The Pioneer and the Dutch were the last tournaments of the annual European summer circut for U.S. junior players,which also included earlier events in Spain and Italy. 

World University Squash Championships on Tap

U.S. SQUASH and the Collegiate Squash Association are pleased to announce the five person team that will be traveling to Melbourne, Australia, to compete in the 2010 World University Squash Championships, July 10th - July 18th. Selected to represent the United States are Todd Harrity (pictured on left) from Princeton University, Chris Hanson from Dartmouth College, Alex Domenick from Cornell University, Kristen Lange, formerly of the University of Pennsylvania, and Logan Greer of Yale University. The team will be coached by Paul Assaiante from Trinity College, who was recently named National Coach by U.S. SQUASH. 

U.S. Squash Championships Schedule Released

The dates and locations for the 2010-2011 U.S. Championship Series have been announced. National titles will be competed for this season at 19 U.S. Championships, across juniors, adults, hardball and doubles. The 2010-2011 season will also mark the debut of a new team event, the National League Finals, to be held in New York City, May 20th-22nd, 2011. 

Amanda Sobhy Wins World Junior Squash Championship

Amanda Sobhy defeated Nour El Tayeb in four games to win the 2010 World Junior Women's Squash Championship in Cologne, Germany. Sobhy, who resides in Sea Cliff, New York, rebounded after dropping the first game to the fourth seeded Egyptian, sweeping the next three to take home the title, 3-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7.

Sobhy Knocks Out Defending Champion to Reach Final

Amanda Sobhy became the first player ever from the United States to reach the final of the 2010 World Junior Women's Squash Championship when she defeated top-seed and defending champion Nour El Sherbini of Egypt in three thrilling games, 12-10, 14-12, 11-9 to advance in Cologne, Germany. The third-seeded Sohby, currently #36 in the WISPA rankings, will play for the world title tomorrow evening against fourth-seeded Nour El Tayeb, a 15-13, 11-9, 11-9 upset winner over the number two seed, Dipika Pallikal of India.

Sobhy to Face Top Seed in Semis

Amanda Sobhy defeated Anaka Alankamony of India to advance to the semi-finals at the 2010 World Junior Women's Squash Championship in Cologne, Germany. Sobhy need just 22 minutes to sweep the eighth-seeded Alankamony in three games, 12-10, 11-4, 11-6. She will now face top seed and defending champion Nour El Sherbini of Egypt in the semi-finals.

Sobhy and Blatchford Reach World Quarters

Amanda Sobhy defeated Egyptian Yathreb Adel in four games while Olivia Blatchford swept Melissa Alves of France in three straight as both advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Junior Women's Squash Championship in Cologne, Germany. This marks the first time the United States has put two players in the final eight at a world squash championship.

American Juniors Win Five of Eight Divisions at Italian Junior Open

US junior squash players traveled to Riccione, Italy to compete in the Italian Junior Open, earning five of the seven divisions offered. Further underscoring the strength of the American players, four of the five winners played fellow Americans in the finals of their division.

Squash Coaches Recognized With USOC Awards

U.S. SQUASH recognized three coaches with the 2009 U.S. Olympic Committee Coach of the Year honors. In receiving this award, all three coaches are also nominated to be selected as the USOC Coach of the Year among all National Sports Governing Bodies. Jack Wyant from the University of Pennsylvania was named National Coach of the Year, Terry Eagle of the Cate School in California was named the Developmental Coach of the Year while Alec Wysoker (pictured on left) was recognized as the Volunteer Coach of the Year for his work with SquashBusters, an urban program in Boston.

Paul Assaiante Tapped to Lead National Teams

U.S. SQUASH announced that Paul Assaiante has accepted the position of National Coach. In this newly created position, Assaiante will lead the U.S. SQUASH coaching staff in their efforts to raise the profile of the U.S. Teams nationally and on the world stage, with the goal of elevating their performance at international competitions. Assaiante will remain in his role as Men’s Head Squash Coach at Trinity College where he has led the Bantams to a record 12 consecutive National Championships.

Sobhy and Blatchford Head U.S. Contingent in Germany

Amanda Sobhy (NY), and Olivia Blatchford (CT) are seeded third and sixth respectively as they lead the U.S. Junior Team which will be competing in the 2010 Women’s World Junior Individual Championship, June 25th-29th , at the ACR Sportcenter, in Cologne, Germany. Joining Sobhy and Blatchford on the U.S. squad are Mary Elena Ubina (CT), Hayley Mendez (NY) and Katie Tutrone (MD).

U.S. SQUASH Awards Presented

This spring, U.S. Squash presented three of its most prestigious awards to outstanding members of the squash community. The U.S. Squash President’s Cup was awarded to Boston's Jeanne Blasberg, the DeRoy Sportsmanship Award was granted to Ash Egan of Haverford, PA, and Lillian Fast of Greenwich, CT, and the William T. Ketcham Award for most improved was presented to Stamford, CT’s Maria Elena Ubina and Florham Park, NJ’s Faraz Khan. 

Boston to Host Showdown at Symphony

In what promises to be a fast-paced and vibrant event, Boston¹s venerable Symphony Hall will host the squash world's inaugural World Squash Champions Challenge competition. Set for Wednesday, September 22, 2010, "Showdown at Symphony", will bring together 2010 World No. 1 Ramy Ashour (Egypt), 2009 World No. 1 Gregory Gaultier (France), 2008 and 2007 World No. 1 Amr Shabana (Egypt) and fan-favorite and World No. 1 of 2006, Jonathon Power, to compete in a short match shootout for the sport's first World Champions Challenge title.

Junior Men Set for Ecuador

Olivia Blatchford Captures First WISPA Crown

Seventeen year old Olivia Blatchford won her first WISPA tour title, defeating Canadian Miranda Ranieri in a five game thriller to take home the top prize at the 2010 FASSP SRC Open in Southport, CT. After dropping the first game, 10-12, Blatchford, who hails from nearby Wilton, CT, was able to fight back, winning the next two, 11-3 and 11-9. Ranieri, the former Yale All-America, tied the match with an 11-7 win in the fourth, setting up a dramatic fifth, in which Blatchford prevailed in a see-saw battle, 14-12, to notch her inaugural win on the Women's pro tour. 

World Of Squash Hails Historic Sobhy Success

Leading figures from the world of Squash are hailing the success of Amanda Sobhy, the US teenager who this month became the first 16-year-old to win four WISPA World Tour squash titles. Just two weeks after upsetting the top seed in the final of the Racquet Club International in St Louis in April to clinch her third Tour crown - thereby overtaking Malaysia's reigning world number one Nicol David's two-title record established as a 16-year-old in July 2000, Sobhy went on to claim the New England Open trophy in Natick, Massachusetts.

 

Bassett and Mathur Win U25 Doubles

Graham Bassett and Manek Mathur defeated Trevor McGuinness and Todd Ruth to win the Men's title at the 2010 National Under 25 Doubles Championships in Greenwich, CT. Alia Aziz and Caroline Reigeluth teamed up to take home the Women's title while J.P. Rothie and Lily Lorentzen came out on top in the Mixed draw, stopping Aziz and Ruth in three straight games. 

Junior Doubles Contested in Wilmington

Junior players from around the country competed for titles in eight draws at the 2010 U.S. Junior Doubles Squash Championships, hosted by the Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, DE. Andrew McGuinness and Devlin McLaughlin, members of the 2010 U.S. High School Team Champion Episcopal Academy (PA) squad, teamed up to take home the title in the BU19 Division while Randy Beck and and August Frank came away with the BU17 crown.

McGuinness and Drake Win Intercollegiate Doubles Title

The University of Pennsylvania's Trevor McGuinness and Porter Drake defeated Princeton's Todd Harrity and Kelly Shannon in five games to win the 2010 Ketcham Cup, symbolic of the Intercollegiate Doubles Championship, in New York City. McGuinness, who last year teamed with Thomas Mattson to win the title, and Drake recovered from a two game deficit, winning 13-5, 10-15, 15-6, 15-12, 15-8. 

Snyder and Sargent Lead Way at Bronze Championships

David Snyder( MD) defeated Geoffrey Keating (MD) in the Boys final while Caroline Sargent (WA) topped Hadley Chu (NY) in the Girls finale to win their respective U19 Divisions at the 2010 U.S. Junior Bronze Squash Championships in New Haven, CT. Over 240 players competed in the final singles event on the 2009-2010 U.S. Junior Championship calendar. 

Amanda Sobhy Wins Historic Third WISPA Title

Amanda Sobhy secured her place in Squash history when she won the Women's Racquet Club International to become the first player to claim three Tour titles as a 16-year-old. Second seed Sobhy (NY) scored her surprise 11-3, 11-6, 12-10 victory over Alana Miller, the 29-year-old top seed from Canada, in the final of the $12,150 WISPA World Tour championship at The Racquet Club in St Louis. 

Schwartz Duo Win Father Son Championship

Joshua and Sanford Schwartz defeated the team of Chris and James Kempner to win the Open Division title at the 2010 U.S.Father-Son Doubles Squash Championships, hosted at the Racquet and Tennis Club, New York Athletic Club and the University Club in New York City. 

Russell and Prockop Take Top Skill Level Titles

Joe Russell (PA) defeated defending champion Jacques Swanepoel (NY) in a thrilling five game finale, 9-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 11-9, to win the 6.0 title at the 2010 U.S. Squash Skill Level Championships in King of Prussia, PA. Hope Prockop (MA) did not drop a game as she captured the Women's 5.5 Championship, topping Juliana Lilien (NY) 11-7, 11-7, 11-6, in the final. 

Scharff and Grainger Win Mixed Doubles

Steve Scharff (CT) continued his winning ways in doubles, teaming with Natalie Grainger (CT) to capture the Open Division at the 2010 U.S. Mixed Doubles Squash Championships in Phiadelphia, PA. Scharff, the current head squash professional at the Round Hill Club in Greenwich, CT, who, along with Dylan Patterson took the top prize at the U.S. Doubles Championships two weeks ago and Grainger, the reigning U.S. Women's singles champion, defeated Emily Lungstrum (NY) and Ryan O'Connell (NY) in the final, 17-15, 15-6, 15-11.

Williams College Hosts Junior Silvers

Over 220 players traveled to Williamstown, MA, to compete in the 2010 U.S. Junior Silver Squash Championships, hosted for the first time by Williams College. The tournament was held in conjunction with the Berkshire Open, a $25,000 PSA event.

Scharff and Patterson Capture Doubles Crown

Steve Scharff (CT) and Dylan Patterson (NY) stopped Ryan O'Connell (NY) and Addison West (NY) in three straight games to win the Open Division title at the 2010 U.S. Squash Doubles Championships in Baltimore, MD. Scharff and Patterson reached the final with suprising 3-2 semi-final win over two time defending champions Trevor McGuiness (PA) and Whitten Morris (NY). 

Doubles Championships Set for Baltimore

Over 130 men's and women's teams will be competing for titles in 14 Open and Age Group Draws as the 2010 U.S. Squash Doubles Championships get underway today in Baltimore, MD. The tournament will be contested over the next three days at the Baltimore Country Club, the Maryland Club, the Meadow Mill Athletic Club and the Towson Center Courts.

Masters Champions Crowned in Newport

The rainy and windy conditions failed to dampen spirits as over 200 players competed for titles in 15 divisions from ages 35+ to 80+ at the 2010 U.S. Masters (Open Age Group) Championships this past weekend in Newport, Rhode Island. The Masters was held concurrently with the U.S. S.L. Green and Women's Championships at St.Georges School and Portsmouth Abbey. 

Illingworth and Grainger Defend Titles in Newport

Julian Illingworth (NY), despite dropping a game for the first time in the tournament, won his unprecedented sixth straight title at the 2010 U.S. S.L Green Squash Championship in Newport, RI. Illingworth, ranked 31st in the world, took home the top prize by virtue of a 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 11-5 win over Gilly Lane (PA). Natalie Grainger (CT) also defended her title in the Women's Championship, having little trouble stopping sixteen year old Amanda Sobhy (NY) in three straight games, 11-3, 11-4, 11-7.

Julian Illingworth (NY) continued rolling through the draw as he swept Ryan Donegan (CA) in three straight games, 11-2, 11-6, 11-5, to reach the final at the 2010 U.S. S.L. Green Championship in Newport , Rhode, Island. Illingworth,seeded #1, will attempt to win his sixth straight U.S. championship this afternoon when he faces second seeded Gilly Lane (PA). Lane set up a rematch of last years final by topping Chris Gordon (NY), 11-9, 13-11, 11-7.

 

 

 

Illingworth Reaches Semis

Julian Illingworth defeated Richard Chin in three games, 11-4, 12-10, 11-8, to reach the semi-finals at the 2010 U.S. S.L. Green Championship in Newport, Rhode Island. Next up for Illingworth (NY), as he looks for his sixth straight U.S. Championship, is Ryan Donegan (CA), who moved forward when fourth seeded Ben Oliner (NY) had to retire due to injury in their quarterfinal match.

Illingworth Seeks Sixth Straight Crown

Julian Illingworth will look to capture his sixth straight title as play gets underway today at the 2010 U.S. S.L. Green Championship in Newport, RI. Illingworth, who trains out of New York City and is 31st in the current PSA rankings, is seeded to meet fellow PSA touring pro Gilly Lane (PA), ranked 59th, in the final.

Harvard Duo Sweeps CSA Individual Championships

Harvard first year player Laura Gemmell defeated Trinity’s Pamela Hathway in a thrilling five-game match to win the 2010 Women’s Individual Championship while her Crimson classmate Colin West took home the top prize on the men's side with a three game win over Princeton's Todd Harrity.

Junior Championships Underway in New Haven

Over 300 of the top junior squash players in the country are competing for titles in ten divisions at the 2010 U.S. Junior Squash Championships (Closed), taking place this weekend at the Brady Squash Center on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, CT.

Harvard University capped off an undefeated season by beating the University of Pennsylvania in the finals to take home the 2010 Howe Cup, symbolic of the Women's College Squash Association National Team Championship. Harvard, which narrowly lost out to Princeton in last seasons title match, put the punctuation on a dominating weekend at the Brady Squash Courts in New Haven, with a 6-3 win in the finale.

Trinty Seeks Twelfth Straight Title

Episcopal and Greenwich Academy Repeat at High School Championships

Episcopal Academy (PA) and Greenwich Academy (CT) continued to build upon their respective dynasties as they steam rolled through the draws to capture the Division 1 titles at the 2010 U.S. High School Team Squash Championships in New Haven, CT. Philadelphia native Gilly Lane defeated Cesar Salazar of Mexico in the final to win the inaugural Fairmount Open at the Fairmount Athletic Club in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Lane, a former All-American squash standout at the University of Pennsylvania and currently the # 2 ranked player in the United States, thrilled his hometown crowd and captured his third overall PSA Tour title, 11-4, 4-11, 15-13, 11-5.

 

Scholastic Squash Reaches New Heights for 2009-2010 Season

In all, over 280 of the top junior squash players in the country competed at the Meadow Mill Athletic Club.

2009 Junior World Team Selection Criteria

U.S. SQUASH is pleased to annouce the selection criteria for the 2008-2009 season. This criteria will be used to select players for the Junior Women’s World Team Championships taking place in Chennai, India from July 22 to August 2, 2009.

Team Selection will be determined on a points system based on 6 total events: 4 Junior Championship Tour (JCT) events (click here for more information about the JCT), the U.S. Junior Championship (formerly the U.S. Gold Championship), and a 16 person playoff at the end of the season. Participation in the U.S. Junior Open (12/20 -12/23) will earn players a standard point value regardless of finishing position. After the completion of the JCT and National Junior Championship, a player’s best four (4) out of five (5) event results will be averaged to determine the 16 players, who are age eligible for the World Team, that will be invited to the playoff.
