U.S. High School Championships Kick Off in Connecticut

The 2012 U.S. High School Team Squash Championships, the largest squash tournament in the world, gets underway today in Connecticut. Starting this morning, 1,240 players representing 155 teams from 16 states will compete for titles in ten divisions.

Greenwich Teams Sweep Middle School Championships

Teams from Greenwich, CT, swept all three division titles this past weekend at the 2012 U.S. Middle School Team Squash Championships held at Yale University in New Haven, CT. Brunswick won the Boy's Division 1 title, Greenwich Academy the Girls Division 1 crown, while Eastern Middle School earned the top prize in Boy's Division 2. 

 

Matthew Bests Willstrop in TOC Final

Nick Matthew claimed his first Tournament of Champions title with a win over James Willstrop in an 85-minute match 8-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-7.  The victory will also reinstate Matthew with the World #1 ranking.

James Willstrop cruised to an easy three game win over Daryl Selby while Nick Matthew battled past Greg Gaultier in four to set up an all English final at the 2012 J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions in New York City.

Greg Gaultier defeated Amr Shabana, 11-9, 5-11, 11-5, 11-5, to reach the semifinals of the 2012 J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions in New York City. The third seed will now face top seeded Nick Matthew, who beat Mohamed El Shorbagy, 12-10, 11-7, 11-5. In the other semifinal, second seeded James Willstrop will face fellow Englishman Daryl Selby.

Mudge and Gould Repeat at NAO

Damien Mudge and Ben Gould won their second straight North American Open Doubles title in Greenwich, CT, last night, defeating Matt Jenson and Yvain Badan, 7-15, 15-10, 15-14, 15-11. Mudge has now won the NAO with three different partners and has equaled Gary Waite's record of ten titles. 

Selby and Willstrop Advance at TOC

Victories by Daryl Selby and James Willstrop in the quarter-finals of the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions ensured that England will be represented in the final of the first PSA World Series squash event of the year. Selby swept past Egyptian qualifyer Marwan El Shorbagy in three games while Willstrop stopped Peter Barker, also in three, at Grand Central Terminal in New York City. 

McGuinness and Lemmon Repeat at Junior Doubles

With timely reverses, good power and numerous volleys, Andrew McGuinness and George Lemmon won the BU19 Junior Squash Doubles Championships for the second year in a row. They did not drop a game throughout their three matches. Kevin Flannery and Jamie Ruggiero were equally impressive, winning the BU17 division without losing a game. 

TOC Quarterfinal Lineup Set

Egyptian teenager Marwan El Shorbagy became the first qualifier in ten years to make the quarter-finals of the 2012 JP Morgan Tournament of Champions, defeating England's Tom Richards in five games at Grand Central Terminal in New York City. Mohamed El Shorbagy, Marwan's older brother, also reached the quarters of the first PSA World Series event of the year when he got past Cameron Pilley, also in five games.

Tom and Hazel Jones Inducted Into Hall of Fame

Tom and Hazel Jones, the founders and directors of Squash News for twenty-one years, and the directors of fourteen U.S. Opens and one North American Open, were formally inducted into the U.S. SQUASH Hall of Fame in a ceremony held in New York City Thursday night.
 

Yale Tops Trinity to End Streak

Yale University defeated Trinity College, 5-4, to end Trinity's record 252 match win streak. Yale, which narrowly lost to Trinty in last years Collegiate finals, thrilled the overflow crowd at the Brady Squash Center in New Haven by handing the Bantams their first loss in nearly 14 years. 

Grand Open to Kick Off Skill Level Regionals

The sites for the 2012 U.S. SQUASH Skill Level Regional Championships have been announced. The tournaments will take place at seven different locations throughout the country, and only players qualifying by being a winner or finalist in his or her division in a Regional Skill Level Championship will be eligible to play in the 2012 U.S. SQUASH Skill Level Championships, hosted March 23rd-25th, at the Meadow Mill Athletic Club in Baltimore, Maryland. 

Junior Doubles to be Contested in Delaware

58 teams comprised of 100 players from around the country will compete for titles this weekend at the 2012 U.S. Junior Doubles Squash Championships, hosted by the Wilmington Country Club, in Wilmington, Delaware. This represents the largest field in the 24 year history of this event.

Tickets are now on sale for the 2012 North American Open, one of ten elite World Series level men’s Professional Squash Association (PSA) tournaments, taking place February 19th-25th, at the Westwood Club in Richmond, VA. The longest running squash tournament in North America, the NAO will feature 15 of the top 20 players in the world and will be streamed live on Squash TV, with the semifinals and finals being streamed live on ESPN3. 

Tournament of Champions Set for Grand Central

“This is the deepest and most competitive men’s championship draw I have seen in in the 15 years I have been organizing these championships in Grand Central Terminal,” said John Nimick, president of Squash Engine, Inc., the promoter of the 2012 J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions, as he announced the draws for the world’s largest spectator squash event. The men’s 32-player draw, a PSA World series event, features 24 of the top 25 world ranking players, with the remaining eight spots to be determined by a 32-player qualifying draw. 

Ubina Captures Junior Open Crown

American Maria Elena Ubina lived up to her # 1 seed as she swept second seeded Diana Garcia of Mexico, 11-9, 11-5, 12-10, to win the GU19 title at the 2011 U.S. Junior Open Squash Championships in Cambridge, MA. Ubina was joined on the podium by fellow U.S. players Ayush Menon, who captured the BU11 top prize, Salim Khan, winner of the BU13 Division and Reeham Sedky, who took home the GU15 crown.

American’s Sabrina Sobhy and Reeham Sedky will face off in the Girl’s Under 15 finals today at the 2011 U.S. Junior Open Squash Championships in Cambridge, MA. Katie Tutrone and Maria Elena Ubina will also each be seeking titles in the GU17 and GU19 divisions respectively. On the boy’s side, three Americans will be competing for championships, including Ayush Menon in the BU11 division, Salim Khan in the BU13 division and Max Martin in the BU15 division.

 

 

U.S. Players Seek Finals at Junior Open

The quarter and semifinals are on tap today at the 2011 U.S. Junior Open Squash Championships in Cambridge, MA. Seven U.S. boys are left in the tournament, including Edward Columbia and Dylan Murray, who will face off in the quarterfinals, guaranteeing a U.S. semifinalist in the BU19 division. On the girl’s side, twelve Americans are still competing, highlighted by three quarterfinalists in the GU15, GU17 and GU19 divisions

 

 

Record Field Set for Junior Open

A record field of over 750 players, from over 20 countries, will compete at the 2011 U.S. Junior Open Squash Championships, December 17th-20th, in Cambridge, MA. The 20% increase from last year's Open makes this the largest individual junior squash tournament in the world.

Hamill Announced as Junior Men's Team Coach

Adam Hamill has been named Head Coach of the U.S. Junior Men's Squash Team. Hamill has served as the Junior Men's Assistant Coach since 2007.  Hamill represented Scotland on the Junior National Team in 2000 at the World Junior Championships and went on to coach several Scottish  National Team players. 

Ken Stillman Named VP of Pan American Squash Board

Former U.S. SQUASH Chairman of the Board Ken Stillman has been elected to serve as Vice President on the Board of Directors of the Pan American Squash Federation (FPS). Stillman’s term will run until 2015, to coincide with the Quadrennial Pan American Games. 

Registration Available for 2012 U.S. Mixed and Junior Doubles Championships

Registration is now available for the 2012 U.S. Mixed Squash Doubles Championships. The event will take place January 27th-19th, at the Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, PA. All players under the age of 30 are eligible for a reduced entry fee. The U.S. Junior Doubles Championships will take place January 20th-22nd  at the Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, DE. Junior mixed divisions are available at no extra fee.

Registration is now available for both the 2012 U.S. Middle and High School Team Squash Championships. The Middle School Championships will take place January 27th-29th, on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, CT. The High School Championships, annually the largest squash tournament in the world, is scheduled for February 3rd-5th, at premiere squash venues throughout Connecticut.

The 2012 National League Finals will take place April 20th-22nd, at the Brady Squash Center on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, CT. National Capital Tops Philly For Howe Cup Title

National Capital of Washington, D.C. defeated defending champion Philadelphia to capture the top prize in the A Division at the 2011 U.S. Women's Team Championships at the Meadow Mill Athletic Club in Baltimore, MD. Over 200 women representing 36 teams competed over the three days as titles were awarded in four divisions.

U.S. Celebrates Pan Am Medals

The U.S. Men's and Women's teams returned from a successful Pan American Squash Championships,with every member of the team bringing home a medal from Guadalajara, Mexico. The total U.S. Medal count of four included one silver medal and three bronze.

The U.S. Men and Women both lost in the semifinals of the team competition at the 2011 Pan American Squash Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico. The men dropped their semi to Canada while the women were eliminated by Columbia.

The United States Men and Women both posted victories as team play got underway at the 2011 Pan American Squash Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico. The men swept El Salvador 3-0, while the women, behind the sterling play of teenager Maria Elena Ubina, got past Brazil 2-1.

The U.S. team of Chris Gordon and Julian Illingworth were narrowly defeated by hometown favorites Arturo Salazar and Eric Galvez of Mexico in the doubles final at the 2011 Pan American Squash Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico. The U.S. Men and Women begin play today in the team tournament, taking on El Salvador and Brazil respectively.

Seeds Prevail at Open

The opening round of the 2011 Delaware Investments U.S. Open Squash Championships saw three qualifiers back on court soon after their successes last night, but Tom Richards, Daryl Selby and Hisham Ashour were in no mood to show mercy. The world rankings predicted a close match between Omar Mosaad and Cameron Pilley, ranked 14 and 16, but the Egyptian came through in three close games. 

 

Junior Member Dues to Supplement Program Enhancements

The U.S. SQUASH Board of Directors approved a modest junior member dues increase effective October 1, 2011. The increase is part of a funding plan to increase sweeping junior program enhancements focusing on building out the world’s leading officiating infrastructure. 

Intercollegiate Doubles Draws Record Field

Over 30 men’s and women’s teams from 15 different schools will be competing this weekend for three Intercollegiate Doubles titles at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia. The men’s draw is the largest with 20 teams including defending champs Ryan Mullaney and Gabriel Melo from Franklin & Marshall. The women’s and mixed draws both have eight teams, with the women’s event in its second year and the mixed in its inaugural.

Gordon Wins El Salvador Open

Chris Gordon won the second PSA title of his career when he defeated Joan Lezaud of France to win the El Salvador Open in San Salvador, El Salvador. Gordon, a member of the U.S. Men's National team that finished 7th at this past summers World Team Championships in Germany, will face Thierry Lincou of France in the opening round of the 2011 Delaware Investments U.S. Open Squash Championships on Saturday.

U.S. SQUASH and Delaware Investments announced the completion of a multiyear sponsorship agreement for the U.S. Open Squash Championships. The U.S. Olympic Committee has created Team USA Grants to assist organizations within the U.S. Olympic Family to improve sustained competitive excellence. U.S. SQUASH submitted a video entitled "Excellence in Urban Squash", and if chosen, the $12,000 grant  will be used to provide elite, talented, urban students with the opportunity to train with national team coaches, integrate with the U.S. National Team and subsidize the cost for competitive opportunities. The videos that garner the most votes will be awarded the grants.

Malaysia Gets By U.S. at Worlds

Malaysia defeated the United States, 2-1, at the 2011 Men's World Team Championships in Paderborn, Germany. Ong Bee Hee, despite dropping the first game, defeated Chris Gordon in four, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-4.  Mohamed Azla also recovered after losing the first game, bouncing back to sweep Julian Illingworth in the next three to take the match, 6-11, 11-2, 11-4, 11-4. 

Egypt Stops U.S. in Quarterfinals

Second seeded Egypt defeated the United States, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Men's World Team Championships in Paderborn, Germany. With the loss, the U.S. will now face Malaysia, who were knocked out in their quarter by France, with an opportunity for a best ever fifth place finish still a possibility.

U.S. Reaches Quarterfinals With Win Over Canada

Julian Illingworth battled back from a 2-0 deficit and beat Shahier Razik in a five game thriller as the United States defeated Canada, 2-0, to reach the quarterfinals of the 2011 Men's World Team Championships in Paderborn, Germany. With the win the U.S now faces second seeded Egypt, a 2-0 winner of host Germany, with a semifinal berth at stake.

Despite dropping their final pool play match to Italy, the United States advanced to the round of sixteen at the 2011 Men's World Team Championships in Paderborn, Germany. The eighth seeded U.S., which finished with a 2-1 pool play record, will now face seventh seeded Canada, with the winner moving on to the top eight. Canada emerged undefeated from their pool with wins over Scotland, Mexico and Namibia.

Chris Gordon defeated John Williams in the deciding match to lead the U.S. to a 2-1 victory over Switzerland in pool play at the 2011 Men's World Team Championships in Paderborn, Germany. With the win, the U.S. guarantees itself a spot in the round of 16. They will take on Italy today in the final round of pool play. 

U.S. Sweeps in First Round of Pool Play

The United States got off to a fast start, sweeping Ukraine in the first round of pool play at the 2011 Men's World Team Championships in Paderborn, Germany. Led by Julian Illingworth who easily defeated Ruslan Sorochinskiy in the top spot, the eighth seeded Americans had very little trouble as they did not drop a game in the entire match. Next up for the U.S., as pool play continues, is Switzerland.

The World's top ranked Men and Women have entered the 2011 U.S. Open Squash Championships, September 29th-October 6th, in Philadelphia PA. Led by World # 1's Nick Matthew and Nicol David, 22 of the top 25 ranked men, along with the top 8 ranked women will compete for $175,000 in combined prize money at the Daskalakis Center on the campus of Drexel University.

U.S. Wins Second Straight Ont-Am Title

The United States repeated their victory of a year ago with a resounding 16-8 win over Ontario in the 2011 Ontario-American Challenge at the White Oak Resort and Spa in Ontario, Canada. After losing tight matches in 2008 and 2009, the U.S. juniors overpowered their neighbors to the North for the second straight year to take home the "Battle of the Border" trophy.

2011 Ontario-American Challenge to be Contested This Weekend

Egypt Retains World Title

Nour El Sherbini stopped Olivia Blatchford in the deciding match as Egypt narrowly defeated the United States to win the 2011 Women's Junior World Team Championship in Boston, MA.  Despite the loss, the second place finish represented the best result ever of any U.S. team in a World Championship.

Haley Mendez stopped Aparajitha Balamurukan in a tense four game battle to lead the United States into the finals of the 2011 Women's Junior World Championships in Boston, MA. With the match against India tied at one all, Mendez thrilled the home crowd, outlasting Balamurukan 11-8, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9, to catapult the U.S. into todays championship tilt against Egypt.

The United States defeated Wales and Australia by identical 3-0 scores to remain unbeaten in pool play at the 2011 Womens's World Junior Squash Championships in Boston MA. With the victories, the U.S. now  heads to the quarterfinals today where they will face New Zealand at 4:30 EST.

 

U.S. Women Sweep Guyana

The U.S., despite resting their top player, easily swept aside Guyana, 3-0, in the first round of pool play at the 2011 Women's Junior World Championships in Boston, MA. With Amanda Sobhy sitting out in anticipation of today's pool play doubleheader, Haley Mendez filled in at the bottom of the lineup and had no trouble with Mary Fung-A-Fat, winning 11-3, 11-7, 11-3. Olivia Blatchford and Sabrina Sobhy, playing at #1 and # 2 respectively, easily won their matches in three games.

Third Time is the Charm for El Tayeb

Nour El Tayeb defeated former champion Nour El Sherbini, 11-5, 3-11, 11-7, 11-8, to win the Women's World Junior Individual Squash Championship in Boston, MA. Tayeb, who had also reached the final the previous two years, losing to El Sherbinin in 2009 and Amanda Sobhy in 2010, wasn't about to let her final crack the the world title get away, winning the final two games after El Sherbini had leveled the match at 1 all.

Nour El Sherbini defeated Amanda Sobhy and Nour El Tayeb topped Emily Whitlock to set up an all Egyptian singles final at the 2011 Women's World Junior Squash Championships in Boston, MA. El Sherbini, who won this title as a 13 year old in 2009, topped American Amanda Sobhy in three hard fought games, 11-5, 12-10, 11-9, while the top-seeded El Tayeb was dominant in her 11-8, 11-3, 11-5, win over England's Whitlock.

Amanda Sobhy is now just two wins away from defending the World Championship she won a year ago in Cologne, Germany. The dynamic New Yorker moved a step closer to another title by defeating Egyptian Mariam Metwally, 11-6, 11-3, 11-5, in the quarterfinals at the 2011 Women's World Junior Squash Championships in Boston, MA. Sobhy will now face another Egyptian, Nour El Sherbini, who stunned the squash world when she won the World Championship two years ago at age 13, in the semifinals.

Amanda Sobhy and Olivia Blatchford continued their hot play as both swept past their overmatched opponents to advance to the quarterfinals at the 2011 Women's World Junior Squash Championships in sweltering Boston, MA. Sobhy needed only 20 minutes to take down Malaysian Tan Yan Xin, 11-4, 11-5, 11-4, while Blatchford was just as dominating in her 11-6, 11-8, 11-5, win over Melissa Alves of France.

Haley Mendez produced the biggest upset on day two of the Women's World Junior Squash Championships in Boston, MA. The unseeded 17-year-old ousted top Australian junior Tamika Saxby, a 5/8 seed, 11-8, 12-10, 11-9 and will now face Egypt's Salma Hany, a 9/16 seed, for a place in the quarter-finals.

Murray Falls Short of Quarterfinal in Heretals

Dylan Murray upset Frenchmen Jerome Dedat to advance into the round of 16 at the 2011 Men's World Junior Squash Championships in Herentals, Belgium. The unseeded Murray, playing what he described as his "best squash in a long time", took 40 minutes to sweep the 9/16 seeded Dadot, 11-6, 11-9, 11-6. Next up for Murray is the 5/8 seed, Declan James of England, with a spot in the quarterfinals at stake. 

Murray Advances at World Juniors

Dylan Murray defeated Yannick Lindemann of Switzeralnd to advance to the second round of the 2011 Men's Junior World Squash Championships in Herentals, Belgium. Murray, the current U.S. U19 champion from Bronxville, NY, had little trouble topping Lindemann, winning 11-7, 11-6, 11-5, in only 25 minuutes to move on to the round of 32 where he will face Jerome Dadot of France.

The 2011-2012 Junior Championship Tour (JCT) event schedule as been announced. The JCT's, now in their 4th year, were developed to foster competiton amongst the top junior players at premier squash venues throughout the country. This season there will be five JCT events on the calender.

Adult Final Rankings Announced

U.S. SQUASH is pleased to announce the release of the 2010-2011 Season Adult Final Rankings. Players qualify for rankings by competing in U.S. Championships, tournaments, team leagues, ladders, and club leagues. This past season, over 1100 players fulfilled the requirements for a final season ranking, a 52% increase from 2009-2010. 

U.S. Men's Team Set for Germany

Seven-time U.S. Champion Julian Illingworth will lead the team that will represent the United States at the 2011 Men's World Team squash championships, taking place August 21st-27th, in Paderborn, Germany. Illingworth will be joined by veteran teammates and fellow PSA touring professionals Gilly Lane and Chris Gordon along with Princeton All-American and defending Inter-Collegiate singles champion, Todd Harrity. 

U.S. Teams Hold Squad Training in Hartford

The present and future of U.S. National Squash Teams gathered under one roof as the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams joined the Junior Men’s and Women’s National Teams for squad training at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, June 20th-22nd. Under the supervision of National Teams Head Coach Paul Assaiante, the players practiced for three days, training with, and competing against, one another. 

U.S. Players Capture Italian Junior Titles

A large contingent of U.S. players participated in the 2011 Italian Junior Open, June 17th-19th, in Riccione, Italy. Competing against more than 100 players hailing from 15 different countries, the U.S. was able to return home with two titles. Emily Jones of Rye, New York, took home the GU17 title, defeating Charlotte Demange of France, 11-7, 11-9, 12-14, 11-9. In the GU19 division, Chloe Chemtob from Winter Park, Florida, took home the top prize winning 11-5, 5-11, 11-7, 11-3, over fellow U.S. player Tory Dewey from New Cannan, CT.

Grainger and Bassett Take Team Trials

The 2011 Pan American Team Trials took place this past weekend at the Sports Club/LA in New York City. Natalie Grainger cruised through the field while not dropping a game to win the Women’s draw. Graham Bassett had an impressive performance as well winning the Men’s draw in an exciting 4 game match against Bryan D. Keating.

Changes to Junior Ranking Structure Announced

U.S. SQUASH has announced several changes to the junior ranking structure to take effect this summer and fall, including adjustments to the ranking average divisor and age-up policies. These changes are a result of continued discussions with teaching professionals, players, parents, and other constituents.

 

Pan Am Trials to Be Contested in New York

The U.S. Men's and Women's Team Trials will take place June 18th-19th, at the Sports Club LA in New York City. The trials are being held in order to finalize the players and alternates who will represent the U.S. at the 2011 Pan American Games, being held October 14th-30th, in Guadalajara, Mexico. Approximately 6000 athletes from 42 countries are expected to participate in 36 sports during the games, which are held every four years.

U.S. SQUASH Board Members Elected, By-laws Amended

At the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Members held on May 21 during the inaugural National League Finals held in Boston this past weekend, three new members of the Board of Directors were elected. The incoming Board members, Emily Ash Lungstrum, Terry O’Toole and Mark Pagon, will all serve as Class 4 members with terms beginning July 1, 2011 and extending to June 30, 2015.

2011 Women's U.S. Open to be Biggest Ever

The Women's International Squash Players' Association has confirmed that the 2011 US Open will become part of the WISPA World Series, and boast the biggest prize-fund in its history. The move will see the prize-fund double from the 2010 figure to $60,000, and the prestigious tournament join the raft of events on the re-branded WISPA World Series, the top tier events on the women's tour.

 

Under 30 Doubles Contested in New York City

Graham Bassett and Greg McArthur defeated Shaun Johnstone and Jacques Swanepoel to capture the Men's division title at the 2011 National Under 30 Doubles Championships in New York City. McArthur also teamed with Fernanda Rocha to win the mixed division, while Rocha completed a double dip of her own by winning the Women's top prize with her partner Larissa Stephenson. 

Boston Teams Sweep NLF Championships

Teams from the Boston area took home the top prize in each division this past weekend at the 2011 National League Finals in Cambridge, MA. This inaugural event brought top adult teams from throughout the country to the Murr Center courts on the campus of Harvard University for the culminating event of the 2010-2011 sanctioned league season.

Scholar-Athlete Application Now Available

The application for the 2010-2011 U.S. SQUASH Scholar-Athlete Award, recognizing high school students who excel in both the classroom and on the squash court, in now available online. The Scholar-Athlete Award program has shown significant growth during its five years of existence, from 47 awards granted in the first year of 2006 to 178 recipients last season.

World Doubles Titles Awarded in Toronto

Damien Mudge and Ben Gould of Australia defeated John Russell and Clive Leach of England to win the Men's title at the 2011 World Squash Doubles Championships at the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club in Toronto, Canada. Stephaine Hewitt and Seanna Keating prevented an Australian sweep as the Canadian duo defeated Narelle Krizek and Natarsha McElhinny to take home the Women's championship.

Columbia Coaches Reign at Skill Level Championships

Columbia University squash coaches Jacques Swanepoel and Kelsey Engman came away with the top prizes at the 2011 U.S. SQUASH Skill Level Championships this past weekend at the Meadow Mill Athletic Club in Baltimore, MD. Swanepoel avenged his finals defeat at last years Skill Levels by topping Philadelphian Joe Russell in the Men's 6.0 championship while Engman stopped local Baltimore club pro Kim Palterman to take the top prize in the Women's 5.0 draw.

 

Junior Bronze Championships Awarded in New Haven

The 2010-2011 U.S. SQUASH Junior Championship Series concluded in New Haven, CT, this past weekend as over 240 players competed at the U.S. Junior Bronze Championships, hosted at the Brady Center on the campus of Yale University. The weekend was highlighted by large entries in the BU13, BU15 and BU17 divisions,with Osummanu Imoro (CT), Grayson Bubrosky (CT) and John Rohrbach (CT) each winning five matches to take home the top prize in their respective draws.

 

U.S. Skill Level Championships Set for Baltimore

The 2011 U.S. SQUASH Skill Level Championships kick off this evening at the Meadow Mill Athletic Club in Baltimore, MD. For the first time, players had to qualify for the tournament by being a winner or finalist in his or her division in one of seven Regional Skill Level Championships played this past season, making this the highest caliber U.S. Skill Level Championship ever. Titles will be awarded in ten divisions over the weekend.

Lemmons Win Father-Son Championship

The team of George and George B. Lemmon (PA) defeated Scott and Will Simonton (NY) to win the Open division at the 2011 U.S. Father-Son Squash Doubles Championships in New York City. The Lemmons, who last year took home the top prize in the 17&U division, stopped the top seeded Simontons in four games, 15-10, 9-15, 15-11, 15-8, in the final to win the championship.

U.S. Squash has announced the recipients of two of it’s most prestigious awards to outstanding members of the junior squash community. The DeRoy Sportsmanship Award, given annually to a ranked male and female junior player in their senior year who has risen above the expectations of sportsmanship and the William T. Ketcham Award, which acknowledges one female and one male ranked junior squash competitor who has demonstrated tremendous dedication and improvement throughout the season, were presented at the U.S. Junior Squash Championships in New Haven, CT.

Tim Wyant teamed with Emily Lungstrum to capture the Open Division at the 2011 U.S. Mixed Doubles Squash Championships in Philadelphia, PA. The top seeded New York duo defeated  Ben Howell and Carrie Hastings of Philadelphia in a dramatic five game final, 15-14, 12-15, 15-14, 8-15, 15-9, to win the title. 



 



Silver Championships Decided in Williamstown

Over 270 players traveled to Williamstown, MA, to compete in the 2011 U.S. Junior Silver Squash Championships, hosted for the second year in a row by Williams College. The tournament was held in conjunction with the Berkshire Open, a $25,000 PSA event. Juniors competed for national titles in ten age group categories in this second to last junior singles tournament in the U.S. SQUASH Junior Championship Series. The final singles tournament, the U.S. Junior Bronze Squash Championships, will take place April 29-May 1, at Yale University in New Haven, CT.

 

 

U.S. Junior Doubles Contested in Wilmington

Junior players from around the country competed for titles in nine draws at the 2011 U.S. Junior Doubles Squash Championships, hosted by the Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, DE. Andrew McGuinness and George Lemmon teamed up to take home the title in the BU19 Division while Ailsa Agnew and Jillian Baker won the GU19 crown.

Julian Illingworth (NY) will attempt to win his seventh straight U.S. Championship in Cambridge, MA, this afternoon when he meets Gilly Lane (PA) in a rematch of last years final. Ilingworth received a semi-final scare as Princeton University sophomore and current intercollegiate champ Todd Harrity (PA) nearly pulled off a stunning upset, pushing the 32nd ranked PSA tour veteran to a fifth game, before eventually losing 12-10, 11-3, 10-12, 9-11,11-3.

The U.S. SQUASH Skill Level Regional Championship Series wrapped up this past weekend as the New England, Western and Southeast regionals were contested. With the series completed, 160 players are now eligible to compete in the highly selective U.S. SQUASH Skill Level Championships, hosted April 29-May 1, at the Meadow Mill Athletic Club in Baltimore, Maryland.

 

McGuinness and West Take Doubles Crown

Trevor McGuinness (PA) and Addison West (NY) topped defending champions Steve Scharff (NY) and Dylan Patterson (NY) in four tight games to win the Open Division title at the 2011 U.S. Squash Doubles Championships in Chicago, IL. U.S. SQUASH Announces Annual Meeting of the Members

U.S. SQUASH will host its annual Meeting of the Members at the 2011 National League Finals, taking place May 20th-22nd, at Harvard University's Murr Center. The meeting will be held Saturday, May 21st, at a time and location still to be determined.

On the agenda for the meeting will be a brief overview of U.S. SQUASH's vision as well as the official election to the board of Directors of the Nominating and Governance Committee recommended, Board -nominated candidate(s).

 

New Online Club Referee Exam Now Available

The revised Club Referee exam is now available online. All members can now logon, take the test and immediately see the results after finishing. All players that pass will have their profile automatically updated to their appropriate Referee Level. The new Club Referee exam has been streamlined by reducing the number of questions and now features video clips of matches where “you make the call.”

 

USOC Recognizes Squash Coaches

U.S. SQUASH recognized three coaches with the 2010 U.S. Olympic Committee Coach of the Year honors. In receiving this award, all three coaches are also nominated to be selected as the USOC Coach of the Year among all National Sports Governing Bodies. Martin Heath from the University of Rochester was named National Coach of the Year, Renato Paiva of the Access Youth Academy in California, was named the Developmental Coach of the Year while Pat Yuen was recognized as the Volunteer Coach of the Year for his work forming and coaching public middle and high school teams in Greenwich, CT.

U.S. Squash is pleased to announce the release of the 2011 National High School Rankings. All players currently competing in U.S. SQUASH SSP High School Leagues are eligible to be listed. The rankings are based off a player’s rating from all High School match play, including league dual matches and the U.S. High School Team Championships. The National High School Rankings are used to integrate results from leagues across the country, and highlight the growth of the game in schools nationwide.

 

U.S. to Host Women's World Junior Squash Championships

Harrity Wins CSA Individual Crown

Todd Harrity of Princeton University defeated Nick Sachvie of Cornell University in three straight games to win the men's title at the 2011 Individual Collegiate Championships in Hanover, NH. With the victory, Harrity becomes the first American player to win the men's title since 1990. In the women's draw, Yale's Millie Tomlinson stopped defending champion Laura Gemmell of Harvard to win the championship.

Century Doubles Titles Awarded in New York

Titles were awarded in five divisions as a record 87 teams participated in the 2011 U.S. Century Doubles Championships in New York City. In the Open Division of the tournament, in which the two players comprising a team must have a combined age of 100 or more years, Albert Tierney and Doug Lifford swept past defending champions Gordon Anderson and Jeff Stanley in the final, 15-7, 15-10, 15-12.

Yale University remained undefeated for the season on both the men's and women's sides as they swept their weekend matches. The Yale men topped Williams 9-0 and followed that up by stopping Darmouth 7-2. The women also swept Williams 9-0 and although they had a tougher time against Dartmouth, they managed to escape Hanover with a 6-3 win.

The United States defeated Holland 2-1, advancing to the final eight at the 2010 Women's World Team Squash Championship in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Latasha Khan got the U.S. off to a quick start, defeating Annelize Naude in three tight games, 15-13, 11-7, 11-7. Amanda Sobhy continued her stellar play, clinching the victory for the U.S. with a scintillating four game win over Orla Noom, 6-11, 11-1, 11-5, 12-10. The United States will now face second seeded Australia in the quarterfinals.

 

U.S. Sweeps Austria at Squash Championships

The United States bounced back from their opening round loss to England by sweeping past Austria, 3-0, in the second round of pool play at the 2010 Women's World Team Squash Championship in Palmerstown North, New Zealand. Olivia Blatchford made the most of her tournament debut, blitzing Judith Gradnitzer, 11-9, 11-3, 11-7, in just 19 minutes. Playing in the #1 spot, Latasha Khan defeated Birgit Coufal, 11-8, 11-7, 11-8, while Amanda Sobhy breezed by Sandra Polakin, 11-4, 11-5, 11-2.

 

England Tops U.S. at World Team Squash Championships

Despite a valiant effort from reigning world junior champion Amanda Sobhy, the United States was beaten by top-seeded England in the opening round of pool play at the 2010 Women's World Team Squash Championships in Palmerstown North, New Zealand. Sobhy, the seventeen year old sensation from New York, took the first two games off Tania Bailey, currently ranked #26 in the World, before falling in five games, 10-12, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-4. Next up for the United States is Austria on Tuesday.

Dartmouth Sweeps Highlight College Squash Roundup

The Dartmouth College Fall Classic proved to be a success for the hosts as both the men and women won all their matches this weekend in Hanover, New Hampshire. The men defeated Navy, Stanford, Bowdoin and Hamilton, all by identical 9-0 scores, while the women defeated Bowdoin and Hamilton, highlighting a busy weekend of College Squash Association play.

 

Run to the Roar Scheduled for November 24th Release

A major new book about squash in America is coming out to much acclaim. Next Wednesday, November 24th, Penguin is publishing Run to the Roar: Coaching to Overcome Fear. A behind-the-scenes look at the Trinity College men's squash dynasty, it is written by Paul Assaiante, the U.S. National and Trinity College squash coach, and James Zug, the journalist and historian. Like Zug's first book, Squash: A History of the Game, this is sure to be an essential part of any squash player's library.

 

Record Participation Marks Frank Millet Squash Tournament

Over 300 of the top junior players in the country converged on the Murr Center squash courts at Harvard University for the 2010 Frank Millet Championship, the second of this seasons Junior Championship Tour (JCT) events. The record field was 15% larger than any previous JCT and marked a 35% increase in participation from last years Frank Millet Championships. 

U.S. Women Win Gold at Pan American Squash Championships

Led by current World Junior Champion Amanda Sobhy and WISPA veteran Natalie Grainger, the United States Women's Squash team defeated Canada 2-0 to win the gold medal at the 2010 Pan American Squash Federation Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The U.S. Men, after dropping a thrilling semi-final to eventual champion Mexico, captured the bronze medal, defeating Brazil, 2-0.

 

 

Greg Zaff Honored with Manhattan Institute's Social Entrepreneurship Award

Greg Zaff, (pictured on left) founder of SquashBusters and the first Executive Director of the National Urban Squash and Education Association, was honored with the Manhattan Institute's Social Entrepreneurship Award award last week at a dinner at the Princeton Club of New York. U.S. Captures Three Silver Medals at Pan Am Squash Championships

Natalie Grainger of the United States narrowly lost to Samantha Teran of Mexico, 6-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8, taking the silver medal in the Women's Singles at the 2010 Pan American Squash Federation Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Grainger was joined on the podium by her bronze medal winning teammate Amanda Sobhy. The U.S. also captured silver medals in the Women's Doubles and the Mixed Doubles competitions. The team event gets underway today.

 

Philadelphia Takes Top Prize at Howe Cup Squash Championships

Philadelphia only dropped one match as they cruised to victory in the A Division at the 2010 U.S. Women's Team Championships (Howe Cup) this past weekend in Rye, New York. Over 200 women from around the country competed over the three days as titles were awarded in four divisions.

U.S. Squash Team Looks for Gold at Pan American Championships

The competition will consist of an individual tournament for both the men and the women starting Saturday, followed by the team competitions, commencing on Wednesday. 

Illingworth Wins PSA Squash Title in Ottawa

Six Time U.S. Champion Julian Illingworth celebrated his first PSA World Tour title success on foreign soil when he won the GoodLife Open in Ottawa, Canada, by defeating Englishman Joe Lee, 11-6, 11-7, 11-6. Top-seeded in the $10,000 Tour event, Illingworth reached the final without dropping a game.

 

Duncalf Takes Weymuller Squash Title

U.S. SQUASH has announced that the Junior Guidelines for the 2010-2011 season are now available online. The Junior Guidelines include further information on the new ranking system, eligibility for junior tournaments and National Championships as well as qualification criteria for U.S. National Teams. The changes are designed based on feedback from players, teaching professionals, parents, fans and officials.

 

Great Lakes Region Hosts Squash Season's First JCT

Over 200 players participated as the first event of the 2010-2011 Junior Championship Tour (JCT) was held this past weekend in Cleveland, Ohio. Now in their third year, the JCT's were created to foster competiton between top ranked players while also giving juniors the opportunity to play at some of the top squash facilities in the country. This past weekend's JCT-Great Lakes kicked off the season long series, which includes the JCT @ Harvard (Frank Millet Championships), the JCT @ Princeton and the JCT-Philadelphia.

 

U.S. Wins Can-Am Squash Doubles

The United States defeated Canada 43-35 to win th 2010 Can-Am Cup title this past weekend in Toronto, Canada. The bi-annual doubles squash tournament featured the best teams from both countries in open and age group competition. While the Canadian men were able to sneak by the United States men, winning their division 28.5-25.5, the U.S. Women were dominant throughout the weekend, handily defeating their Canadian counterparts, 17.5-6.5, as the U.S. defended the 2008 title they won in Boston.

The top women professional squash players in the world return to New York to participate in the world renowned Carol Weymuller Open tournament hosted by The Heights Casino in Brooklyn, October 26th-31st. Can-Am Cup Squash Championship Set for Toronto

The Can-Am Cup, a bi-annual doubles squash tournament between the United States and Canada, will be held this weekend, October 22-24, in Toronto, Ontario. This exciting, Ryder Cup like competition, will feature the best doubles teams from both countries. This year there will be 104 players, with 52 competing on each side at three venues, including the host site, the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club.  

Sobhy Wins Fifth WISPA Squash Title

Reigning World Junior Champion Amanda Sobhy continued her relentless assault on WISPA World Squash Tour titles by winning the $12,900 Women's Lopes Royal Open this past weekend at the MDO Squash Club in Brasilia, Brazil.  The seventeen year old New Yorker,who became the youngest finalist in the history of the U.S. Open earlier this month in Chicago, upset top seed Line Hansen, 11-6, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9, to take home her fifth WISPA crown.

Awards Announced at U.S. SQUASH Annual Assembly

Eric C. Fast and Danielle Maur were awarded two of U.S. SQUASH’s National Awards this past weekend at the U.S. SQUASH Assembly in Chicago, IL. Fast was honored with the U.S. SQUASH President’s Cup, the Association's most prestigious citizenship award given annually to someone who has made substantial contributions to the game of squash. Maur was given the W. Stewart Brauns, Jr. Award for making substantial administrative contributions to the game of squash. 

New U.S. SQUASH Skill Level Championship Structure Announced

U.S. SQUASH announced an important change to the Regional Skill Level Championships at the 2010 Assembly in Chicago last week. For 2011, only players qualifying by being a winner or finalist in his or her division in a Regional Skill Level Championship will be eligible to play in the U.S. SQUASH Skill Level Championships, being held April 29 - May 1, 2011,  in Baltimore, MD.

El Hindi and Atkinson Win Open Squash Titles

Wael El Hindi and Vanessa Atkinson overcame their opponents and the cold weather to win the Men's and Women's titles at the 2010 U.S. Open Squash Championships in Chicago, Illinois. El Hindi, the New York based Egyptian, defeated Laurens Jan Anjema of the Netherlands in four games, 11-8, 5-11. 11-7, 11-7, while Atkinson had no trouble in the women's title tilt, overwhelming U.S. teenager Amanda Sobhy in a straight game sweep.

With the rain falling and the temperatures hovering in the 40's, El Hindi electrified the chilled crowd at Millenium Park's Pritzker Pavillion, keeping Anjema off balance all evening with a dazzling array of drops, lobs and steady length.  After dropping the second game to Anjema, El Hindi regained his focus, using long rallies to movie his opponent all over the court, sweeping the last two games to take the trophy.

Atkinson's win was never in doubt as, for second straight night, she overwhelmed her opponent, ending the seventeen year old Sobhy's magical run  winning the women's crown three short games.

Sobhy Becomes Youngest Ever U.S. Open Squash Finalist

Amanda Sobhy has claimed another entry in the squash history books, beating Italian Manuela Manetta in the semi-finals of the 2010 U.S. Open Squash Championships to become the youngest player ever to reach the final of her country's longest established tournament. The 17-year-old eighth seed dispatched  the unseeded Manetta, 11-3, 11-5, 5-11, 11-9, to reach the final of the $36,500 WISPA World Tour event at Millennium Park in Chicago.

 

Top Seed Lincou Ousted at U.S. Open Squash Championships

Seventh ranked Egyptian Omar Mossad knocked out top seeded Frenchman Thierry Lincou in last nights quarterfinal match, winning a five game thriller, 8-11, 11-3, 13-11, 10-12, 11-8. Mossad now moves on to the semifinals tonight where he will take on Laurens Jan Anjema of the Netherlands, who swept Egypt's Mohammed Abbas in three, 11-5, 12-10, 11-6. 

Sobhy Reaches Open Squash Semis

Reigning World Junior Champion Amanda Sobhy of New York, looking to add another title to her already historic squash resume, defeated Ireland's Aisling Blake to reach the semifinals of the 2010 U.S. Open Squash Championships in Chicago, IL. Sobhy, who became the first 16 year old to win four WISPA titles earlier this year, recovered after dropping a marathon first game to win the next three, moving on to the semis, 13-15, 11-8, 11-4, 11-7. Sobhy will next face Manuela Mannetta. The Italian dropped Latasha Kahn of the United States in a five game thriller, 6-11, 11-3,6-11, 11-4, 12-10.

The top two seeds, Thierry Lincou of France and New York based Egyptian Wael El Hindi, continued the march to their anticipated finals encounter by easily advancing to the quarterfinals at 2010 U.S. Open Squash Championships in Chicago, IL. Lincou swept England's Adrian Waller in three straight games, 11-5, 11-3,11-1, while El Hindi dispatched Canadian Shahier Razik in four, 11-6, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7. Starting tonight, the tournament moves outdoors to the glass court at Chicago's Millennium Park.

U.S. SQUASH National League Finals Announced

U.S. SQUASH will host a new National Championship for the 2010 – 2011 season. The new championship, titled the U.S. SQUASH National League Finals (NLF) will pit the best league teams in the country against each other to compete for the title of National Champions. Winners of sanctioned league divisions will be invited to participate in this inaugural event hosted at Harvard University’s Murr Center in Cambridge, MA, May 20-22, 2011.

Alex Gough to Give Keynote Address at U.S. SQUASH Annual Assembly

U.S. SQUASH has announced that Alex Gough (pictured on left), the CEO of the Professional Squash Association (PSA), will be the keynote speaker at the 2010 Annual Assembly being held October 1st-2nd, in Chicago, IL. U.S. Rolls to Win in Squash Border Battle

The United States ended a two year drought in resounding fashion as they rolled to a 19-5 victory over Ontario in the 2010 Ontario-American Challenge at the White Oak Resort and Spa in Ontario, Canada. Fry Replaces Fast on U.S. SQUASH Board of Directors

On July 1, 2010, John A. Fry (pictured on left) officially joined the U.S. SQUASH Board of Directors as a Class 3 Director. Fry takes the place of outgoing Board member Eric C. Fast, whose term expired in June. Fry, who recently left Franklin and Marshall College after eight years as president will assume the role of president at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA on August 1st.

U.S. SQUASH Annual Assembly Set for Chicago

The U.S. SQUASH Board of Directors recently resolved to host an Annual Assembly, the first of which will be held October 1st-2nd, 2010, in conjunction with the U.S. Open Squash Championships in Chicago, Illinois. The Assembly will be an opportunity for all squash constituencies to provide input to the Board of Directors and management on important issues involving the organization. 

Harrity Wins Bronze in Australia

Todd Harrity (PA) (pictured on left) defeated Leo Au of Hong Kong to win the bronze medal at the 2010 World University Squash Championships in Melbourne, Australia. Harrity, who will be entering his sophomore year at Princeton University this fall, bounced back from a loss to second seeded Jen Schoor of Germany in the semi-finals to defeat Au, 11-7, 11-5, 11-3, in the 3/4 playoff. With the individual competition now complete, the United States squad turns their focus to the team competition, which begins tomorrow. 

U.S. Juniors Compete in German and Dutch Tourneys

The United States was well represented as over 200 juniors populated draws at the the 2010 Pioneer Junior Squash Cup in Cologne, Germany, and the 2010 Dutch Junior Open in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The Pioneer and the Dutch, which are both part of the European Junior Super Series, drew nearly 900 players overall, with U.S. players competing in every draw. The Pioneer and the Dutch were the last tournaments of the annual European summer circut for U.S. junior players,which also included earlier events in Spain and Italy. 

World University Squash Championships on Tap

U.S. SQUASH and the Collegiate Squash Association are pleased to announce the five person team that will be traveling to Melbourne, Australia, to compete in the 2010 World University Squash Championships, July 10th - July 18th. Selected to represent the United States are Todd Harrity (pictured on left) from Princeton University, Chris Hanson from Dartmouth College, Alex Domenick from Cornell University, Kristen Lange, formerly of the University of Pennsylvania, and Logan Greer of Yale University. The team will be coached by Paul Assaiante from Trinity College, who was recently named National Coach by U.S. SQUASH. 

U.S. Squash Championships Schedule Released

The dates and locations for the 2010-2011 U.S. Championship Series have been announced. National titles will be competed for this season at 19 U.S. Championships, across juniors, adults, hardball and doubles. The 2010-2011 season will also mark the debut of a new team event, the National League Finals, to be held in New York City, May 20th-22nd, 2011. 

Amanda Sobhy Wins World Junior Squash Championship

Amanda Sobhy defeated Nour El Tayeb in four games to win the 2010 World Junior Women's Squash Championship in Cologne, Germany. Sobhy, who resides in Sea Cliff, New York, rebounded after dropping the first game to the fourth seeded Egyptian, sweeping the next three to take home the title, 3-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7.

Sobhy Knocks Out Defending Champion to Reach Final

Amanda Sobhy became the first player ever from the United States to reach the final of the 2010 World Junior Women's Squash Championship when she defeated top-seed and defending champion Nour El Sherbini of Egypt in three thrilling games, 12-10, 14-12, 11-9 to advance in Cologne, Germany. The third-seeded Sohby, currently #36 in the WISPA rankings, will play for the world title tomorrow evening against fourth-seeded Nour El Tayeb, a 15-13, 11-9, 11-9 upset winner over the number two seed, Dipika Pallikal of India.

Amanda Sobhy defeated Anaka Alankamony of India to advance to the semi-finals at the 2010 World Junior Women's Squash Championship in Cologne, Germany. Sobhy need just 22 minutes to sweep the eighth-seeded Alankamony in three games, 12-10, 11-4, 11-6. She will now face top seed and defending champion Nour El Sherbini of Egypt in the semi-finals.

Amanda Sobhy defeated Egyptian Yathreb Adel in four games while Olivia Blatchford swept Melissa Alves of France in three straight as both advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Junior Women's Squash Championship in Cologne, Germany. This marks the first time the United States has put two players in the final eight at a world squash championship.

American Juniors Win Five of Eight Divisions at Italian Junior Open

Squash Coaches Recognized With USOC Awards

U.S. SQUASH recognized three coaches with the 2009 U.S. Olympic Committee Coach of the Year honors. In receiving this award, all three coaches are also nominated to be selected as the USOC Coach of the Year among all National Sports Governing Bodies. Jack Wyant from the University of Pennsylvania was named National Coach of the Year, Terry Eagle of the Cate School in California was named the Developmental Coach of the Year while Alec Wysoker (pictured on left) was recognized as the Volunteer Coach of the Year for his work with SquashBusters, an urban program in Boston.

Paul Assaiante Tapped to Lead National Teams

U.S. SQUASH announced that Paul Assaiante has accepted the position of National Coach. In this newly created position, Assaiante will lead the U.S. SQUASH coaching staff in their efforts to raise the profile of the U.S. Teams nationally and on the world stage, with the goal of elevating their performance at international competitions. Assaiante will remain in his role as Men’s Head Squash Coach at Trinity College where he has led the Bantams to a record 12 consecutive National Championships.

This spring, U.S. Squash presented three of its most prestigious awards to outstanding members of the squash community. The U.S. Squash President’s Cup was awarded to Boston's Jeanne Blasberg, the DeRoy Sportsmanship Award was granted to Ash Egan of Haverford, PA, and Lillian Fast of Greenwich, CT, and the William T. Ketcham Award for most improved was presented to Stamford, CT’s Maria Elena Ubina and Florham Park, NJ’s Faraz Khan. 

Boston to Host Showdown at Symphony

Olivia Blatchford Captures First WISPA Crown

Seventeen year old Olivia Blatchford won her first WISPA tour title, defeating Canadian Miranda Ranieri in a five game thriller to take home the top prize at the 2010 FASSP SRC Open in Southport, CT. After dropping the first game, 10-12, Blatchford, who hails from nearby Wilton, CT, was able to fight back, winning the next two, 11-3 and 11-9. Ranieri, the former Yale All-America, tied the match with an 11-7 win in the fourth, setting up a dramatic fifth, in which Blatchford prevailed in a see-saw battle, 14-12, to notch her inaugural win on the Women's pro tour. 

World Of Squash Hails Historic Sobhy Success

Leading figures from the world of Squash are hailing the success of Amanda Sobhy, the US teenager who this month became the first 16-year-old to win four WISPA World Tour squash titles. Just two weeks after upsetting the top seed in the final of the Racquet Club International in St Louis in April to clinch her third Tour crown - thereby overtaking Malaysia's reigning world number one Nicol David's two-title record established as a 16-year-old in July 2000, Sobhy went on to claim the New England Open trophy in Natick, Massachusetts.

Graham Bassett and Manek Mathur defeated Trevor McGuinness and Todd Ruth to win the Men's title at the 2010 National Under 25 Doubles Championships in Greenwich, CT. Alia Aziz and Caroline Reigeluth teamed up to take home the Women's title while J.P. Rothie and Lily Lorentzen came out on top in the Mixed draw, stopping Aziz and Ruth in three straight games. 

Junior Doubles Contested in Wilmington

Junior players from around the country competed for titles in eight draws at the 2010 U.S. Junior Doubles Squash Championships, hosted by the Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, DE. Andrew McGuinness and Devlin McLaughlin, members of the 2010 U.S. High School Team Champion Episcopal Academy (PA) squad, teamed up to take home the title in the BU19 Division while Randy Beck and and August Frank came away with the BU17 crown.

The University of Pennsylvania's Trevor McGuinness and Porter Drake defeated Princeton's Todd Harrity and Kelly Shannon in five games to win the 2010 Ketcham Cup, symbolic of the Intercollegiate Doubles Championship, in New York City. McGuinness, who last year teamed with Thomas Mattson to win the title, and Drake recovered from a two game deficit, winning 13-5, 10-15, 15-6, 15-12, 15-8.

David Snyder( MD) defeated Geoffrey Keating (MD) in the Boys final while Caroline Sargent (WA) topped Hadley Chu (NY) in the Girls finale to win their respective U19 Divisions at the 2010 U.S. Junior Bronze Squash Championships in New Haven, CT. Over 240 players competed in the final singles event on the 2009-2010 U.S. Junior Championship calendar. 

Amanda Sobhy Wins Historic Third WISPA Title

Amanda Sobhy secured her place in Squash history when she won the Women's Racquet Club International to become the first player to claim three Tour titles as a 16-year-old. Second seed Sobhy (NY) scored her surprise 11-3, 11-6, 12-10 victory over Alana Miller, the 29-year-old top seed from Canada, in the final of the $12,150 WISPA World Tour championship at The Racquet Club in St Louis.

Steve Scharff (CT) continued his winning ways in doubles, teaming with Natalie Grainger (CT) to capture the Open Division at the 2010 U.S. Mixed Doubles Squash Championships in Phiadelphia, PA. Scharff, the current head squash professional at the Round Hill Club in Greenwich, CT, who, along with Dylan Patterson took the top prize at the U.S. Doubles Championships two weeks ago and Grainger, the reigning U.S. Women's singles champion, defeated Emily Lungstrum (NY) and Ryan O'Connell (NY) in the final, 17-15, 15-6, 15-11.

Julian Illingworth (NY), despite dropping a game for the first time in the tournament, won his unprecedented sixth straight title at the 2010 U.S. S.L Green Squash Championship in Newport, RI. Illingworth, ranked 31st in the world, took home the top prize by virtue of a 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 11-5 win over Gilly Lane (PA). Natalie Grainger (CT) also defended her title in the Women's Championship, having little trouble stopping sixteen year old Amanda Sobhy (NY) in three straight games, 11-3, 11-4, 11-7.

Julian Illingworth (NY) continued rolling through the draw as he swept Ryan Donegan (CA) in three straight games, 11-2, 11-6, 11-5, to reach the final at the 2010 U.S. S.L. Harvard Tops Penn to Win Howe Cup

Harvard University capped off an undefeated season by beating the University of Pennsylvania in the finals to take home the 2010 Howe Cup, symbolic of the Women's College Squash Association National Team Championship. Episcopal Academy (PA) and Greenwich Academy (CT) continued to build upon their respective dynasties as they steam rolled through the draws to capture the Division 1 titles at the 2010 U.S. High School Team Squash Championships in New Haven, CT. High School Championships Boast Record Field

For the second time in five years SquashBusters hosted the National Urban Team Championships in Boston, MA. 265 participants from nine programs competed over three days at the Badger Rosen SquashBusters Center and Harvard’s Murr Center. Lane Wins Fairmount Squash Open

Philadelphia native Gilly Lane defeated Cesar Salazar of Mexico in the final to win the inaugural Fairmount Open at the Fairmount Athletic Club in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Lane, a former All-American squash standout at the University of Pennsylvania and currently the # 2 ranked player in the United States, thrilled his hometown crowd and captured his third overall PSA Tour title, 11-4, 4-11, 15-13, 11-5.

 

Scholastic Squash Reaches New Heights for 2009-2010 Season

The number of teams participating in sanctioned High School League play is expected to increase this season by 25%, with the number of squash markets being affected potentially doubling from approximately five to ten. The first Middle School League will also be sanctioned this year. 

Illingworth Elected to PSA Board

Julian Illingworth, the # 1 ranked player in the United States, has been elected onto the Professional Squash Association Board. The 25-year-old Yale graduate, currently ranked # 28 in the world, succeeds Englishman Mark Chaloner, who has retired from the board after periods as both Chairman and President.

U.S. number one Julian Illingworth romped to the third PSA World Tour squash title of his career when he beat Egyptian Amr Swelim in the final of the Rhode Island Open, in Middletown, Rhode Island. The 25-year-old top seed from New York survived a tough five-game test in the semi-finals where he faced another Egyptian, the former world #13, Mohammed Abbas.

Vanessa Atkinson (NED) was able to overcome a gritty and determined Latasha Khan (U.S.) to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2009 Carol Weymuller U.S. Open Championship in Brooklyn, New York. Atkinson, after dropping the first game 8-11, bounced back to take the next two, 11-6 and 11-8. Khan, with her back against the wall, forced a fifth game with an 11-9 win, before dropping the decider 9-11.

American Latasha Khan defeated England's Victoria Lust to take the final spot in the main draw at the 2009 Carol Weymuller U.S. Open Championship in Brooklyn, NY. Khan, the # 2 ranked player in the U.S., proved too strong for the up and coming young Brit, steamrolling to an 11-5, 9-11, 11-7, 11-6 victory. With the win, Khan, who hails from Seattle, WA, will now meet Englishwoman Vanessa Atkinson as first round play gets underway this evening at the Heights Casino.

Julian Illingworth defeated Kashif Shuja of New Zealand to become the first U.S. player ever to reach the second round of the Kuwait Men's World Open Squash Championship. The New York-based U.S. # 1 player beat Shuja 11-5, 11-8, 12-10 in 46 minutes to set up a second round meeting with second seed Gregory Gaultier, the new world #1 from France.
