This past weekend, 143 boys and girls representing nineteen states traveled to San Diego Squash and Los Angeles Athletic Club to compete in the SoCal Gold from December 27-29. Many juniors made a cross-country trip from the east coast to participate in divisions U19, U17, U15, U13, and BU11.
Gold tournaments feature the highest level of junior competition below Junior Championship Tour events. Draws are restricted to the top thirty-two ranked entrants in each division.
BU19 top seed Jarett Odrich beat sixth seed John Fitzgerald in a four-game final to pick up his first gold tournament title of the season, 7-11, 11-2, 11-4, 12-10. Margaux Losty won the GU19 five player round robin, topping her opponents in all four of her matches.
Three seed Terrence Wang won the BU17s defeating four seed Jacob Ellen in a three-game final, 11-5, 11-7, 11-6. Ellen advanced to the final after upsetting top seed Sean Oen in a five-game semifinal, 11-7, 4-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5. Wang knocked two seed Theodore Mendez out of the semifinal in three games to advance to the final, 11-5, 12-10, 11-1.
In her first GU17 appearance, unseeded twelve-year-old Cassandra Ong defeated top seed Diana Masch and three seed Lucy Martin to win the division. Ong faced Masch in the round of sixteen, coming out on top in the marathon five-game match, 6-11, 8-11, 11-5, 20-18, 11-8. Ong defeated Martin in the final, winning in four games, 11-8, 11-13, 11-9, 11-6.
Four seed William Glaser took home the BU15 title, topping two seed Nikhil Iyer in a three-game final, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8. Glaser advanced to the final after upsetting top seed Samuel Turner in a tight four-game semifinal, 11-6, 11-9, 10-12, 11-6.
Two seed Brenna Dugel beat one seed Allison Chun in four games to pick up her first GU15 gold tournament win of the season 5-11, 11-3, 11-3, 11-5.
Five seed Jack Huang capped a perfect weekend with his first gold tournament win of the season. Huang took home the BU13 title defeating top seed Rohan Iyer in a three-game semifinal, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8, and beating two seed Adam Litchmacher in the final, 11-8, 11-6, 11-6. GU13 two seed Esha Lakhotia won her third gold tournament of the season with a hard-fought five-game final victory over one seed Avni Anand, 4-11, 11-8, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6.
Mukunth Gopalakrishnan won the BU11 four player round robin with victories in all three of his matches. John Ho came in second with two wins. For full tournament results, visit the SoCal Gold tournament page on the US Squash website.
