This weekend’s Squash Revolution DC Gold marked the opening of the junior squash season. The tournament was held at George Washington University and involved 236 players competing in boys’ and girls’ U11, U13, U15, U17, and U19 divisions.
Max Reed won the BU19 division, defeating second seeded Jarett Odrich in three close games, 11-9, 12-10, 11-6. On his way to the final, Reed upset one seed Sean Kenny a four game semifinal, 11-6, 8-11, 11-2, 11-6.
Casey Wong upset one seed Devin Mullaney in a four game final, 11-2, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7, to win the GU19 division. Mullaney did not drop a game in the tournament until her loss to Wong. On her way to the final, Wong defeated two seed Zainab Molani in the semifinals, 11-4, 11-1, 11-7.
David Yacobucci defeated one and two seeds to win the BU17 division. Yacobucci defeated two seed Harrison Gill in a four game semifinal, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8, 12-10, then upset top seed Alex Jung in four games, 11-9, 11-13, 11-2, 11-0.
One seed Eleonore Evans faced two seed Lindsay Stanley in the final of the GU17 division. Evans came back from a 2-1 deficit to win the match in five hard-fought games, 10-12, 11-6, 8-11, 11-1, 12-10.
Burke Giordano upset the top two seeds to win the BU15 division. Giordano knocked out two seed Aditya Kankariya in a three game semifinal, 11-7, 11-1, 11-3. Giordano beat the previously undefeated top seed Duncan Joyce in a close three game final 11-9, 12-10, 11-8.
Top seed Ona Prokes defeated Caroline Neave to win the GU15 division. Neave upset two seed Baila Mudgil to advance to the final. Prokes dropped the first two games of the final to Neave, 7-11, 8-11, but recovered to win the final three games, 11-7,11-8, 11-7.
One seed Charles Mattson beat Rohan Korn in a three game final to win the BU13 division, 11-8, 11-6, 11-7.
Top seed Binney Huffman defeated two seed Eujung Park, who was unbeaten heading up to the final, in a close four games to win the GU13 division, 13-11, 2-11, 11-8, 11-6.
John Ho upset both the one and two seeds to win the BU11 division. Ho overcame two seed Walter Huffman in a five game quarterfinal, 5-11, 11-1, 9-11, 11-8, 12-10. Ho dropped his first game in the final to top seed Lucas Spiro, 6-11, but came back to defeat Spiro winning the following three games, 13-11, 11-6, 11-9.
Top seed Molly Stoltz beat two seed Devon Shatzman in the GU11 division final, 11-7, 11-8, 11-3. Stoltz had an impressive performance this weekend, not losing a single game in the tournament.
The next gold tournament is the Westchester County Gold 2013 held from September 13-15. BU11 and GU11 will be located The Club @ 800, BU13 and GU13 at the Westchester Country Club, BU15 and GU15 at Pyramid Squash, BU17 and GU17 at Westchester Squash, and BU19 and GU19 at the Bronxville Field Club. Gold tournaments feature the highest level of junior competition below Junior Championship Tour events and are restricted to the top 32 ranked entrants in each age division.
