This past weekend, 243 boys and girls competing across U11, U13, U15, U17, and U19 age divisions participated in the Westchester County Gold. The tournament was held at the Westchester County Club, Pyramid Squash, Westchester Squash, and the Bronxville Field Club from September 13-15.
After winning a tough first game, 12-10, two seed Senen Ubina beat David Yacobucci to win the BU19 division, 11-7, 11-8. The victory capped off a perfect weekend for Ubina, who didn’t drop a game all tournament.
Top seed Caroline East defeated two seed Devin Mullaney in the GU19 final, 11-4, 11-4, 11-4. East had an impressive performance this weekend, completing the tournament undefeated.
Top seed Harrison Gill topped two seed Toby Hansford in a tight four-game final to win the BU17 division, 14-12, 11-9, 13-15, 11-0.
Two seed Haley Scott beat Emme Leonard in three games to win the GU17 division, 11-7, 11-4, 11-9. Unseeded Leonard won a tough five game semifinal against Julia Masch to advance to the final, 11-4, 6-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6. Scott had a strong tournament, finishing the weekend without dropping a game in any of her four matches.
One seed Ryan Murray won the BU15 division in a three game final against Jacob Rhee, 11-5, 11-6, 11-4. Rhee upset two seed Max Finkelstein early in the tournament to advance to the quarterfinals.
Four seed Caroline Neave upset two seed Grace Steelman to win the GU15 division, 11-6, 11-5, 11-2. Neave knocked out one seed Casey Kelly in a tough four game semifinal to advance to the final.
Dana Santry defeated Christopher Zachary in a close three game final, 11-9, 11-9, 15-13 to win the BU13 division. Both Santry and Zachary entered the tournament unseeded. Zachary upset top seed Nicholas Spizzirri in the semifinal in five hard-fought games, 11-8, 6-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-8. Santry also played a long semifinal match, knocking out two seed Harry Charlton in five games, 5-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5.
Unseeded Sophia Valzquez came back from a 1-2 deficit to upset two seed Nina Mital in the GU13 final, 8-11, 11-3, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7.
Top seed Tad Carney completed an undefeated weekend with his win over two seed Patrick Keller in a close three game final for his BU11 division victory, 13-11, 11-8, 13-11.
Two seed Margaux Comai upset one seed Abigail Schuster in a four game final. After dropping the first game, 10-12, Comai came back to win the GU11 final, 11-3, 11-6, 11-7.
The next gold tournament is the Fall Foliage Junior Gold held at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire on September 27-29. Gold tournaments feature the highest level of junior competition below Junior Championship Tour events and are restricted to the top 32 ranked entrants in each age division.
