2019-2020 High School All-Americans Announced

US Squash has announced the 2019-2020 High School All-Americans.

All-American recognition celebrates junior players who have reached a pinnacle of accomplishment in junior tournament competition or high school league play. Recipients include the top four ranked players in the boys’ and girls’ U17, and the top eight ranked players in the U19 divisions and those voted on by high school leagues and coaches.

To be eligible for All-American recognition, players must be either a U.S. citizen or a U.S. resident, play on a High School Varsity Team participating in the Scholastic Squash Program or maintain a ranking in the Boys’ or Girls’ Under 17 or Under 19 divisions of the National Junior Rankings. Players must be currently enrolled in high school and in good standing with US Squash.

This year’s All-American ranks include three past U19 national champions, Marina Stefanoni, Olivia Robinson and Thomas Rosini. Six U.S. High School Team Championships winners are represented including Brunswick School’s Dana Santry, Nick Spizzirri, Brian Leonard, David Beeson and Coulter Mackesy and Greenwich Academy’s Binney Huffman. Seven players have represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships including Marina and Lucie Stefanoni, Olivia Robinson, Myles McIntyre, Thomas Rosini, Dana Santry and Nick Spizzirri.

“I have been playing competitive squash for six years and it hasn’t always been easy playing a sport that most of my friends have never seen,” said Ashton Monteiro, a sophomore at Greenwich High School in Connecticut. “Receiving this award from the FairWest League reflects all the hard work I’ve put in on and off the court. Going forward, it will be a good reminder to continue to work hard at this sport I love to play. Thank you US Squash!”

Twenty-three of the All-Americans have also been recognized as Scholar Athletes in past seasons.

“I am extremely grateful to have been selected by the Mid-Atlantic League for this recognition,” said Marguerite Crowder, a junior at St. Catherine’s School in Richmond, Virginia.  “Our league has developed and improved rapidly over the past few years, with each team reaching new heights each season. As I have been on the team since eighth grade and have been involved in US Squash for many years prior to joining Saints Squash, I am excited to see the rise of interest in a sport very close to my heart. As the Mid-Atlantic League has become more competitive with the increase of participation both in the high school league and US Squash individual tournaments, I am especially grateful to have been recognized for this honor. I am thankful to have been recognized as a contributor to the rise of squash in our league and hope that the All American award will inspire girls at St. Catherine’s to try our exceptional sport.”

Five players are international and represented boarding schools in the U.S. including Egypt’s Ismael Atef at St. George’s School, Taha Dinana at the Masters School and Basmala Sayed Ahmed at the Westover School, Barbardos’ Meagan Best at Choate Rosemary Hall and Ecuador’s David Costales at the Kent School.

“I am grateful and indeed honored to receive my second consecutive All-American recognition,” said Meagan Best, a senior at Choate.  “When I started high school at Choate Rosemary Hall, I never dreamt that I would have been recognized in such a distinguished way, and not only once, but twice. The experience of being a member of the Choate athletic program over the past two years has been an exceptional one. I truly enjoyed the camaraderie shared among our squash team, as we supported each other during the ups and downs of our journey together, and was especially proud of how we developed under the guidance of our Coach Jenn Pelletier whose experience, and calm disposition particularly in tough situations, enabled us to achieve some amazing results as individuals and as a team. I will forever be thankful for the experiences gained on team Choate, and will always reflect with pride on my All-American recognition!”
