The 2013 U.S. Women’s Howe Cup Team Championships kicks off at 8 am tomorrow, October 18. Thirty-six teams of women from eight states and Canada traveled to compete across divisions A, B, C and D in this event hosted at the Fairmount Athletic Club in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
This year’s tournament marks the eightieth U.S. Women’s Howe Cup Team Championships held since it’s beginning in 1928. This unique event brings five-woman teams together to compete for the Howe Cup trophy, the first of which was donated in 1955 in honor of the Howe family, the leading family in women’s squash.
Co-chair of the Howe Cup Championships, Amy Milanek, explains, “The Howe Cup is the one tournament of the year that combines women from all different backgrounds and levels of squash into one weekend of competitive fun.
“It is a chance to let the ‘moms’ and ‘professionals’ alike compete in an event that promotes women in an athletic and healthy environment.”
The Howe Cup Championships feature a mix of squash during the day followed by social events, most notably the traditional Saturday Night Party. This allows women to form relationships both on and off the court. Says Milanek, “I am looking forward to the camaraderie, competition and friendships that are created because of this event.”
