Blatchford Clyne and Sabrina Sobhy Progress to Cleveland Classic Second Round

Team USA’s Olivia Blatchford Clyne and Sabrina Sobhy are through to the second round of the $51,250 Cleveland Classic following first-round victories Thursday, January 30, at the Cleveland Racquet Club in Ohio.

The two Americans had contrasting results as Sobhy pulled off a five-game comeback against Ineta Mackevica, while Blatchford Clyne cruised in three games and twenty-three minutes against Czech international Anna Serme.

Sobhy, who has been in strong run of form with three PSA titles over the past three months and two top twenty upsets at the Tournament of Champions earlier this month, endured a forty-five-minute affair against the Latvian world No. 58. Sobhy, world No. 39, made a slow start to the match, dropping the first two games 10-12, 12-14. The twenty-three-year-old was able to swiftly recover and advance in five, however, pushing through the remainder of the match 11-5, 11-2, 11-6.

Sobhy now faces a daunting second round match up against Egypt’s world No. 4 and defending champion Nour El Tayeb Friday at 5pm local time. After easing through the first round, Blatchford Clyne now moves on to face a top twenty opponent in the form of England’s world No. 15 Victoria Lust on Friday at 7:15pm.
