Elysium’s Blomkamp and Copley back the 2020 Olympic bid

Elysium backs the bidWith exactly four weeks to go until the International Olympic Committee vote, director and screenwriter Neill Blomkamp and actor Sharlto Copley have backed the 2020 Olympic bid on the day of Blomkamp’s Elysium premiere.

Elysium,   a futuristic sci-fi thriller starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and Copley is the second major film directed by South African Blomkamp following his debut, Oscar-nominated District 9 in 2009 that also starred Copley (pictured left).

Blomkamp was first exposed to squash upon moving to New Zealand in 2006, and continues to play his preferred sport of the three shortlisted for inclusion into the 2020 Olympics.

“I started playing squash when I moved to New Zealand in 2006.  I moved there to direct the ill-fated HALO movie, ” Blomkamp said.

“The film collapsed, but the squash obsession remained.  Sharlto Copley is also a huge supporter of the game.”

Blomkamp and Copley join actor Dylan Neal and director Tarsem Singh to back the 2020 Olympic bid in the past two weeks as the September 8 IOC decision looms.

You can back the bid by contributing to the US Squash Olympic Fund, purchasing the “I backed the bid” One Sport racquet, following @vote4squash on twitter, and using the hash tag #vote4squash on social media.
