US Squash is pleased to announce that the William S. Broadbent Family of Vero Beach, FL has made a significant contribution to the US Squash Junior Endowment. As a result, the Greenwich Junior Squash Championships will serve as an annual accredited squash tournament for the town of Greenwich in perpetuity. With this leadership gift, it is the hope of the association that the Broadbent’s gift will inspire and encourage other families to join them in making legacy gifts and in effect, endowing other major junior tournaments in their respective cities.
Both Avery and Will began playing squash under the watchful eye of Chris Spahr at the Field Club of Greenwich and Peter Briggs at the Apawamis Club. Avery and Will won the U19 division of the Greenwich Junior tournament as seniors in secondary school in 1999 and 2001, respectively. In recognition of this gift a permanent trophy will be established in Avery’s and Will’s name for the winners in the girl’s and boy’s U19 divisions.
The Broadbent family has been involved for a number of years in supporting squash facilities and athletic programs on the secondary and collegiate level. Bill Broadbent has been an active trustee of what was known as the Board of the USSRA Endowment Fund, and is a current member of the US Squash Investment Committee which oversees US Squash’s endowment funds. In 1997, as chair of the Junior Committee, he started the Junior Squash Endowment Fund to support the development of junior elite and grassroots programming.
