Denison University invites applications for the position of Head Squash Coach for the Men’s and Women’s Club Team. Denison is one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges located less than 30 miles from Ohio’s capital city of Columbus. At Denison, academic achievement is emphasized and development of leadership potential is encouraged. Denison’s club teams are members of the US Squash Association and the College Squash Association. The men’s and women’s teams are composed of players ranging from beginners to experienced players. It is the goal of Denison to provide opportunities for the club members to learn and develop their skills in playing squash while growing as a student-athlete and being competitive at their respective levels through training. We are looking for a dedicated individual that is willing to cultivate the men’s and women’s squash club into a high level, competitive division III program. This will be a two year pilot program with the goal of transitioning the club into a highly competitive varsity organization. At the end of two years an evaluation will take place to determine the next steps for the coach and the team. Denison is committed to a broad-based program of intercollegiate athletics, sponsoring 23 varsity sports; 12 for women and 11 for men.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION: The Head Men’s and Women’s Squash Coach is responsible for the leadership, development and management of squash program. The head coach is responsible for the safety and conduct of the team and complying with the university, CSA and US Squash Association regulations. Coaching duties include but are not limited to planning all aspects of the program including; team selections, preparing the teams for competition through practice and conditioning, developing and applying team rules, developing game strategies and line-ups, and effectively motivating and communicating with the student-athletes. Administrative duties include scheduling of practices and matches, budget management, organization of home and away matches and travel to away matches, supporting the academic success of the athletes, supervision of a student manager, working in collaboration with the equipment and support staff, and providing the Director of Club Sports with appropriate information for publication and press releases. The coach is responsible for recruiting talented and academically qualified student-athletes for both the men’s and women’s teams. Recruiting duties include identifying and contacting prospective students, arranging campus visits, developing printed recruiting materials, meeting with prospective students who have self-selected an interest in squash in the college application process, and assisting the Admissions Office with special events. The coach will teach a course in the major (Health, Exercise, and Sports Studies) or activity courses in the Physical Education program. Additional duties within the Athletic Department may be assigned throughout the academic year. The candidate must have a clear understanding of the role of athletics in the liberal arts, participate actively in the university community, and serve on appropriate university and department committees.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of coaching experience, certification(s) and education is required. Candidates must have a sound knowledge and successful experience in coaching squash; 3 or more years of coaching is preferred (combination of college and experience as a pro at a private club is acceptable); must have the ability to teach the game, and demonstrate the ability to work with individuals of diverse background and experiences; working knowledge of all US Squash Assoc. and CSA rules and regulations; The individual must have current certification in first aid, CPR and AED prior to coaching. The candidate must have a current and valid driver’s license and must be insurable under Denison liability insurance policy.
