About Our Team

Dexter Southfield seeks a Director of Squash to launch and grow a multi-faceted squash program for its student body in the School’s newly built squash facility, scheduled to open in September 2020. The Director of Squash will report to the Director of Athletics and be responsible for building and delivering a competitive squash program in the Upper School, and for creating a competitive Middle School program and a developmental program for Lower School students.

You are an experienced squash coach or instructor seeking to build a comprehensive, new interscholastic and developmental program at one of the region’s most respected independent schools. While sharing your love of the sport, you will create a motivating learning environment for both emerging and experienced student-athletes. You are a highly energetic and productive self-starter with excellent organizational and relationship building skills. You enjoy the rhythm and energy of an independent day school and demonstrate integrity, humor, and sound judgment in everything you do.

To be successful in this role, you must be able to:

  • Provide program oversight and day-to-day management of the Dexter Southfield Squash facility, clinics, competitive events, and court time
  • Coach Upper School Varsity and Junior Varsity teams
  • Build and coach Middle School team(s)
  • Develop and teach squash curriculum for Lower School students (Classes 3-5)
  • Train Athletics colleagues to deliver curriculum
  • Assist in recruiting and training additional coaches for the program
  • Develop and implement summer and holiday camps and clinics
  • Develop a program that offers private lessons and other training opportunities
  • Attend all practices and matches
  • Promote a positive attitude, academic achievement, and personal growth
  • Serve as the key liaison for recruiting, attracting, and retaining prospective and current student-athletes who have an interest in squash
  • Assist student-athletes in the college recruiting process
  • Play an active role in hosting at least two US Junior Squash tournaments on campus per year
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of two years’ experience coaching squash or an equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Previous leadership experience building a squash program founded on consistent philosophies and teaching methods for all teams and coaches
  • Mastery of tactical concepts appropriate for competitive high school play is required
  • Demonstrated success planning, launching, and building a comprehensive and financially self-sustaining squash program
  • Previous experience organizing and directing off-season training programs, camps and clinics highly desirable
  • Outstanding organizational, motivational, and communication skills
  • Ability to effectively work with members of the Dexter Southfield community—students, faculty, staff, administration, parents, and alumni—and with visitors to the Dexter Southfield Squash facility
  • Understanding of academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of students
  • Ability to work in conjunction with Athletic Trainer to ensure that student-athletes receive proper medical and physical training services
  • Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) and possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents
  • Ability to maintain and consistently exemplify the highest standards of professionalism, leadership, sportsmanship and respect
  • Ability to be flexible, effectively manage stress, and adapt to changing work priorities and assignments
  • Valid driver’s license and CPR/First Aid certification required as a condition for employment
  • Successful completion of all pre-employment reference and background checks
