For the second consecutive S.L. Green U.S. Men’s Championship, Andrew Douglas and Chris Hanson upset top seed Todd Harrity and two seed Chris Gordon, respectively, in the semifinals to reach Sunday’s final at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.

Both matches played out simultaneously next to each other on the two show courts, and ended within minutes of each other as Douglas and Hanson both prevailed in four games.

Once again, Douglas—a freshman at UPenn—proved to be the surprise of the tournament, upsetting the seeding in the quarterfinals and semifinals, and notching his second career victory against Harrity, world No. 52, 11-6, 12-10, 5-11, 11-9.

“I’ve been looking forward to this all year,” Douglas said. “I’m looking forward to tomorrow. Last year was kind of a surprise, but I’m ready to go tomorrow. It’s a great result, and the best match I’ve played all season after a tough season. I’m excited to play Chris again, I know his game well, he knows mine well. It’s just going to be who plays better on the day.”

Douglas competed in what was his second S.L. Green last year as a junior, before ending his junior career with a second junior national title before matriculating at UPenn in the fall.

Hanson will defend his national title on the same court that saw him claim his first last year against Douglas. The Dartmouth graduate defeated Gordon, who is ranked just two places above Hanson, 11-4, 10-12, 11-7, 11-6, just minutes after Douglas sealed his place in the final.

In addition to the S.L. Green champion, thirteen National Singles champions will be crowned with finals starting at 9am EDT.
