The 2013 Hardball Singles National Championships were held this weekend at the Merion Cricket Club in Philadelphia with Chris Walker emerging as the champion of the Open division.
The results included Tom Harrity edging out a 3-1 win over Bryce Harding in 50+, Palmer Page winning 60+, Tefft Smith with a narrow 3-1 win over Eric Berger in 65+, Jim Zug taking the 70+ with a 3-1 win over Henry Steinglass, and Bruce Elfenbein winning the 75+ Round Robin.
Walker defeated Hamed Anvari in a thrilling 5-game final match of the Open division.
“Congratulations and hard luck to Hamed in the final. It was a tough match, Hamed came back from 2 down really well and I was fortunate in the end to save it from going into overtime in the fifth, ” Walker said.
“Each time I play the hardball singles game I feel I am improving and I probably played my best Squash ever this weekend.”
Walker hopes to improve participation amongst young squash players in Hardball and is optimistic with more Hardball singles events on the calendar.
“I think there is a place for Hardball singles in the Squash community, it’s a lot of fun and everyone who was there over the weekend had a great time playing and watching the matches. I’ll definitely be there next year to defend my title!”
