The 2020 U.S. Middle School Team Squash Championships saw two programs augment their title records as the Haverford School successfully defended its title, and Greenwich Academy earned a record eighth title Sunday, February 2, at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

The thirteenth Middle School Nationals continued the tournament’s expansion with a record ninety-six teams competing across four boys’ divisions and three girls’ divisions. View all results on the Middle School Nationals Club Locker page.

The girls’ division one produced a number of dramatic results. In in an all-Philadelphia quarterfinal, Episcopal Academy upset top seeds and three-time champions, Baldwin School, 3-2 to reach the semifinals. Greenwich, the four seeds, opened their title run with a 5-0 win over SCH middle school followed by a 4-1 win over defending champions Sacred Heart in the quarterfinals. GA advanced to the final courtesy of a 5-0 semifinal win against Episcopal Academy. In the bottom half of the draw, two seeds Greenwich Country Day School pulled through both the quarterfinals and semifinals with 3-2 scorelines against Greenwich Academy Gold and three seeds Agnes Irwin, respectively. Greenwich Country Day earned a 2-0 lead in the final with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 from Charlotte Pastel and Grace Fazzinga. Yvette O’brien provided a pivotal 3-2 win for Greenwich Academy in the No. 3 position, while Poppy Huffman and Ella Miller sealed the title with 3-0 wins at No. 4 and 5. The 2020 title marks GA’s eighth since the tournament began in 2008–a record for both boys’ and girls’–and the Gators’ first since 2015.

The boys’ division one progressed according to seeding as the top seeds Haverford defeated four seeds Greenwich Country Day School 5-0 in the semifinals, and two seeds Brunswick won a 4-1 semifinal against three seeds Episcopal Academy in the bottom half of the draw. Another close final ensued, as Brunswick picked up wins in the No. 3 and 5 positions by Will Newman and Oliver Velasco, but Haverford prevailed 3-2 thanks to No. 3 Blake Lee, who won 3-0, and the Fords’ No. 1 Graeme Herbert and No. 2 Devon Li winning 3-1 and 3-2, respectively. With the 2020 title and program’s fourth overall, Haverford become just the second boys’ program to have won two or more consecutive titles, which Brunswick achieved twice from 2009-2012 and 2017-2018.

In the girls’ division two, Hackely pulled off a surprise title run, upsetting top seeds Baldwin B in the quarterfinals and defeating surprise finalists Rye Country Day School in a close 3-2 final. The boys’ division two final was also decided by a 3-2 margin, as two seeds Meadowbrook edged Calvert Boys’ C.
