One year after falling short in the 2016 U.S. Mixed Doubles Open final, Narelle Krizek & Ed Garno avenged their loss by winning the 2017 Open national title in a four-game final Sunday, April 9. Germantown Cricket Club and The Cynwyd Club co-hosted the tournament in Philadelphia.
In pool play, Krizek & Garno didn’t drop a game to advance to Sunday’s final where they met Victoria Simmonds & Dave Rosen, who topped their pool with two, four-game wins. A close final saw the first two games split 1-1, at which point Krizek & Garno pulled away to win in four 15-8, 13-15, 15-12, 15-12. Krizek marks her first Open title since 2012, and fourth overall, including the 2008 title with Rosen, while Garno celebrates his first Mixed Doubles national title.
Rosen did earn top honors in a narrow 40+ round robin, retaining the 40+ title for a second year with Amy Milanek, who marks her third consecutive 40+ title. The four-team draw saw three teams finish with a 2-1 record, as the tie-breaker of total games lost separated Rosen & Milanek with three lost, from second place finishers Alan Grant & Emily Lungstrum with four lost.
In the 50+, Thomas Harrity won his second 50+ title and fourth overall with first-time champion Dawn Gray. Harrity & Gray held off second place finishers Beth Fedorowich & Will Carlin in four games.
The first 55+ final ever contested saw Molly Pierce & James Heldring come back from 2-1 down in games, to defeat Sara Luther & David Posner 13-15, 15-12, 11-15, 15-13, 15-8. The title is Pierce & Heldring’s second together in addition to the 2010 50+ title.
