American Spencer Lovejoy won his first career PSA Title in his second career title at the $5,500 Men’s Life Time Mississauga Open Sunday, June 23, in Canada.

Lovejoy, a rising senior at Yale, entered the tournament as the three seed along two other American college players and fellow US Squash Academy products, Harvard’s Timmy Brownell and Princeton’s Cole Becker.

Lovejoy met Brownell, in the quarterfinals in what was their second match up of 2019, following up the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions Wild Card playoff in January, which Brownell won in four games and fifty-four minutes. This weekend however, it was Lovejoy who came out on top 11-4, 9-11, 7-11, 11-4, 11-5 in sixty-one minutes.

In the semis, Lovejoy ended Becker’s surprise semifinal run as the seven seed, avenging his loss at the S.L. Green U.S. Men’s Championship in March 11-8, 11-1, 11-4 in thirty-one minutes, setting up a final against Portuguese top seed Rui Soares.

The final proved to be the longest match of the tournament, extending to ninety minutes, as Lovejoy pulled off the upset 14-12 in the fifth to clinch the title.

Mississauga marked Lovejoy’s second PSA final appearance, following the 2018 Barbados Open. Lovejoy ends his season having competed in nine professional events outside of the college season, earning a world No. 171 ranking.
