More Hope for New Sports in the Olympics

Fingers crossedAccording to Around the Rings (ATR), an online newsletter dedicated to the Olympics, IOC President Thomas Bach revealed some big news regarding the Olympics and, in particular, for those sports like squash that have been working hard to gain inclusion on the Olympic Program.

A month after the IOC dropped the twenty-eight sport cap on the summer Olympics, ATR reported that Bach spoke with the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) and revealed that there may in fact be some flexibility on the previously announced cap of 10, 500 athletes; that it may not be necessary, therefore, to cut events; and that host cities will have the ability to add sports without those additional athletes being counted against the cap.

On Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015, The Star online (www.thestar.com) reported that IOC Vice President John Coates laid out the timetable for the possibility of adding new sports to the Olympic Program during a review of preparations for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. See the full report here.
