Mercedes Benz of Scottsdale Annual Holiday Racquet Sports Tournament Introduces WSA Event

Mercedes of Scottsdale ImageThe 2013 Mercedes Benz of Scottsdale Tournament kicks off today at the Camelback Village Racquet & Health Club in Phoenix, Arizona, as part of the larger Mercedes Benz of Scottsdale Annual Holiday Racquet Sports Tournament. 2013 is the first year that the 500-person joint tennis, squash, and racquetball tournament will feature a professional women’s event.

“This is our first year hosting a pro women’s event, so we have started small with hopes for the tournament to grow each year, ” said tournament director Tina Fuselli.

This WSA Tour 5 event features a main draw of sixteen players from across the world, including three American players, Sabrina Sobhy (seeded third), Kristen Lange (seeded fifth), and Corey Schafer.

Salma Nassar of Egypt and England’s Carrie Ramsey are the tournament’s top two seeds, however, Sobhy and four seed Maria Toorpakai Wazir both reached higher world rankings in November. Sobhy is currently world No. 54 and Wazir is world No. 60.

All first round matches take place today as Sobhy is the first of the Americans to take the court, facing New Zealander Larissa Stephenson.  This is the sixth WSA event of the year for the sixteen-year-old current junior national team member. Sobhy reached the quarterfinals in last week’s WSA event, the Harrow LA Open.

Lange takes on Germany’s Franziska Hennes after Sobhy’s match. This tournament also marks Lange’s sixth WSA event of the year, as she too participated in the Harrow LA Open where she was defeated by fellow American Olivia Blatchford.

Dartmouth graduate Schafer is set to play the tournament’s six seed, Cyrielle Peltier of France. This is Shafer’s third WSA event of her career and her first appearance in a main draw.

The 2013 Mercedes of Scottsdale Tournament continues through the weekend with the final scheduled for the afternoon of November 24. For the full tournament draw and schedule, visit the tournament page or the WSA website.
