Team USA Earns Three Bronze Medals in Pan Ams Individuals and Doubles

Team USA won three bronze medals in the 2017 Pan American Championships individual and doubles competitions, September 2-5, at the Tortugas Country Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Chris Gordon earned the first medal in the men’s individual competition. The veteran pulled out two five-game victories on the same day in the round of sixteen and quarterfinals to reach the semis. Argentina’s Gonzalo Miranda, who reached the semis due to a walkover, defeated Gordon in the semis 12-10, 11-6, 11-8.

Elsewhere in the men’s individual draw, 2015 world juniors veteran and Harvard sophomore Timmy Brownell marked his competitive senior debut with a three-game upset against Colombia’s 9/16 seed Andres Herrera. Brownell then pushed Argentinian 3/4 seed Leandro Romiglio to four games in the round of sixteen.

Team USA claimed two bronze medals in the ensuing men’s and women’s doubles competitions. In the women’s doubles draw, Mariam Kamal and Haley Mendez fulfilled their seeding to reach the semifinals where two seeds Mexico pulled out a close victory 11-9, 11-8.

In the men’s doubles draw, Chris Hanson and Faraz Khan upset Argentinian 3/4 seeds Roberto Pezzota and Leandro Romiglio 11-8, 11-10 to reach the semifinals. In the semis, Mexico’s one seeds Eric Galvez and Arturo Salazar defeated Hanson and Khan 11-8, 11-9.

The individual and doubles results have determined the seeding for the men’s and women’s team competitions, which close out the Pan American Championships, September 6-9. The U.S. men enter pool play as 3/4 seeds competing in Group C against the Dominican Republic and Chile. The U.S. women are unseeded and enter Group A alongside one seeds Mexico and 3/4 seeds Argentina.
