Top Four Seeds to Contest U.S. Women’s Championship Semifinals

The 2016 U.S. Women’s Championship semifinals will be contested by the top four seeds who progressed through the quarterfinals Friday at Harvard University’s Murr Center in Boston.

The opening match represented Harvard’s past and present in the form of current Harvard No. 1 Sabrina Sobhy and Crimson alum Haley Mendez. Mendez caught the three seed and 2014 national champion off guard winning the first game 11-8, but the younger Sobhy sister responded by winning the match in four 11-5, 11-5, 11-5.

Sobhy will face two seed Olivia Blatchford in a rematch of their 2015 semifinal. Blatchford defeated Harvard alum and 40+ national champion Hope Prockop 11-5, 11-5, 11-5 in twenty-eight minutes.

World No. 7 Amanda Sobhy recorded the quickest result of the round, defeating local Bostonian Corey Schafer 11-1, 11-1, 11-3 in thirteen minutes. Sobhy will face recent CSA Individual finalist Reeham Sedky in first semifinal Saturday.

In a rematch of the 2014 U.S. Junior Open final, Sedky held off Harvard’s Kayley Leonard in the closest match of the day 11-9, 11-9, 11-9 in thirty-nine minutes.
