The first ranking event of the WSDA season begins this weekend with the NYC Open, hosted by the University Club of New York.
The eight-team draw is topped by World #1 ranked pair, Dana Betts and Stephanie Hewitt. Betts/Hewitt are seeded to defend their 2015 title in a draw that includes four first-time partnerships.
At the bottom half of the draw, the #2 seeded team of sisters, Narelle Krizek and Natarsha McElhinny will be looking to go one better than last year when they were defeated by Betts/Hewitt in a close 3/1 final. Also in the bottom half of the draw, and seeded to meet Krizek/McElhinny in the semi-finals, are new paring, Meredeth Quick and Suzie Pierrepont. This will be Pierrepont’s first WSDA event in seven months following a ruptured achilles tendon sustained in the final of the Chicago Open in May.
In the top half of the draw Betts/Hewitt are seeded to face the rising stars of the WSDA, Latasha Khan and Tehani Guruge in the semi-final. Khan/Guruge have improved rapidly in the last two seasons. They narrowly missed out on the final of both the Wilson Cup and the Chicago Open earlier in the year, with close 3/2 loses to the #1 seeds in both semi-finals.
The event also features two local players, Emily Lungstrum and Ashley West. Lungstrum, paired with former top US junior player, Julie Curello will be hoping to secure a main draw spot from qualifying on Friday night. Ashley West will make her NYC Open debut with World #9, Tina Rix in the main draw on Saturday following the withdrawal of Fernanda Rocha with a torn meniscus.
Pro Am play begins Friday Dec 1st at 3pm and pro matches begin Saturday Dec 2nd at 2pm. All pro matches will be at the University Club with the final scheduled for Monday night at 5.30pm.
Tournament organizers include University Club squash Chairman, Phil Hofmann along with Scott Fuller, Scott Wilson and Rob Coakley.
Matches will live streamed on www.wsdaprotour.com/live from Saturday, December 2nd @6pm EST.
